Blended or Online?

Guidelines

If you have a COURSE which requires students to enroll in a lecture section and a lab section, and one or more of those sections are taught online, use the following information and guidelines:

The Office of the Provost has determined that when there is a required part of the class meeting on campus and a required part of the class meeting online, then it is a blended scenario (NOT online). This holds true for lecture/lab sections. If one of the sections is offered online, but a counterpart requires on-campus instruction, NEITHER section should be coded with an instructional method of “INET.”  The instructional method of “INET” inappropriately results in students being charged the special tuition rate for online classes, when they will actually be required to come to campus in order to complete the course. Compensation for the faculty member teaching a class online will be handled in a separate manner.

Bottom line: Instructional Method of “INET” should only be used when all sections involved are truly taught online.

Examples

Scenario #1

Course XYZ 101 has one lecture section (XYZ 101, section A) and two lab sections (XYZ 101, section 001; and XYZ 101, section 002). Lecture section A is taught online, but both lab sections (001 and 002) are taught on-campus.

  • Lecture section A should be set up with Campus code “Z,” for off-campus, Instructional Method code “BLND,” arranged meeting time, building code “INET,” and section comment “This course taught in a blended format. Lecture section will be taught online and lab sections will be taught on campus.”
  • Lab sections 001 and 002 should be set up as traditional, on-campus classes.

Scenario #2

Course XYZ 101 has one lecture section (XYZ 101, section A) and two lab sections (XYZ 101, section 001; and XYZ 101, section 002). Lecture section A is taught traditionally, on-campus, but both lab sections (001 and 002) are taught online.

  • Lecture section A should be set up as a traditional, on-campus class.
  • Lab sections 001 and 002 should be set up with Campus code “Z,” for off-campus, Instructional Method code “BLND,” arranged meeting time, building code “INET,” and section comment “This course taught in a blended format.  Lecture section will be taught on campus and lab sections will be taught online.”

Scenario #3

Course XYZ 101 has one lecture section (XYZ 101, section A) and two lab sections (XYZ 101, section 001; and XYZ 101, section 002). Lecture section A is taught traditionally, on-campus, lab section 001 is taught traditionally, on-campus, and lab section 002 is taught online.

  • Lecture section A should be set up as a traditional, on-campus class.
  • Lab section 001 should be set up as a traditional, on-campus class.
  • Lab section 002 should be set up with Campus code “Z,” for off-campus, Instructional Method code “BLND,” arranged meeting time, building code “INET,” and section comment “This course taught in a blended format. Lecture section will be taught on campus and lab section 002 will be taught online.”

Scenario #4

Course XYZ 101 has two lecture sections (XYZ 101, section A; and XYZ 101, section B) and one lab section (XYZ 101, section 001). Lecture section A is taught traditionally, on-campus, lecture section B is taught online, lab section 001 is taught traditionally, on-campus.

  • Lecture section A should be set up as a traditional, on-campus class.
  • Lecture section B should be set up with Campus code “Z,” for off-campus, Instructional Method code “BLND,” arranged meeting time, building code “INET,” and section comment “This course taught in a blended format. Lecture section B will be taught online and lab section will be taught on campus.”
  • Lab section 001 should be set up as a traditional, on-campus class.
