AFAA Personal Trainer Certification

For the aspiring and experienced fitness professional working one-on-one with exercise clients, this three-day certification workshop includes lectures, practical demonstrations and both written and practical exams covering the following topics:

  • Anatomy
  • Communication skills
  • Exercise physiology
  • Exercise programming in the weight room
  • Fitness assessment testing procedures
  • Injury prevention
  • Kinesiology
  • Leadership and motivational coaching
  • Nutrition fundamentals
  • Risk factor assessment guidelines
  • Weight management, special populations and medical considerations
  • Wellness programming

The course objectives are consistent with those of the National Board of Fitness Examiners. Although this course will help prepare you for both AFAA's Personal Fitness Trainer Certification and the Personal Fitness Trainer National Boards, successful completion of the course does not guarantee you will pass either examination.

Aerobics and Fitness Association of America

The AFAA certification workshop includes the following items:

  • Three days of training
  • The “Personal Fitness Trainer Certification v. 3” study guide
  • Written and practical exams
  • One-year AFAA membership ($68 value) or membership extension to current members, including the TeleFitness® access number
  • Subscription to American Fitness magazine
  • AFAA Certified Personal Trainer certificate and ID card upon successful completion of both exams
  • 15 CEUs toward previously achieved AFAA certifications

“Personal Fitness Training: Theory and Practice,” which costs $59+ shipping, is the required text for this workshop and is not included in the regular price. Current CPR certification required before AFAA certification is issued. Weight training/weight room experience is recommended. Early registration and pre-study is suggested.

  • The “Fitness Assessment Video,” which provides step-by-step protocols for many important fitness assessment tests

Missouri State

The AFAA will offer its workshop on the Missouri State campus in the Foster Recreation Center:

  • Primary Group Exercise Certification: Saturday, September 22nd from 1–9:30 p.m.
  • Aqua Fitness: Sunday, September 23rd from 8 a.m.–6 p.m.

The cost for this workshop is as follows:

  • Students, faculty and gym members: $349.30
  • Non-employees and non-members: $499
