Intersession Compensation

Compensation for Intersession Instruction
Provost Policy: Effective September 2007

The Missouri State University Intersession Program is designed to offer regular courses in a special format to facilitate student completion of their degree programs and to support innovative courses that can enrich the student learning experience. Faculty participation in the program is supported through a two-part basis.

Part 1 – Base Pay

Faculty instruction is compensated at the rate of 2.5% per credit hour of the instructor’s nine-month salary plus fringe benefits (approximately 20.43%) for each class. The enrollment necessary to support each class is therefore dependent upon the salary of the instructor and will vary for each instructor. The department head and dean will determine the “break-even point” for each class to determine a minimum enrollment to guarantee payment to the instructor. An instructor whose class generates fewer enrollments than the minimum will have the option of receiving reduced compensation or choosing not to teach the course.

Part 2 – Supplemental Pay

An instructor whose class generates more enrollments than the break-even or minimum enrollment, will receive a salary supplement of $20 per credit hour per student for each enrolled student above the minimum. [Note: the additional supplement to the base salary is not paid on three-credit-hour Intersession classes, a decision made by the Office of the Provost.]

The official enrollment figure for compensation purposes will be the enrollments reflected on the final grade roster which deletes “no pays” and “no shows,” but does include official additions. Enrollments will be verified and then Personnel Action Forms will be finalized and routed for signature. Please note that with this procedure, checks for Intersession compensation will be available approximately six to eight weeks after the conclusion of the Intersession (e.g., in February, for Winter Intersession; in July, for Summer Intersession; and in October, for Fall Intersession).

Fall Intersession compensation will be calculated based on the per-credit-hour cost and faculty member’s salary effective Fall Semester.
