Dr. Frank Einhellig, Chair of the Future's Task Force was absence due to a previously scheduled meeting with the Faculty Senate. At the Faculty Senate meeting, Dr. Einhellig presented a progress report on Task Force activities. Dr. Jim Baker chaired the meeting in his absence.
The meeting began at 4:00 pm in PSU 317 with review and approval of the November 3 meeting notes.
The next item of business was a discussion on the format for the open forums that are to be held to solicit faculty input on the research and scholarship emphasis areas. Ms. Tami Sutton reported that per direction of the Task Force at the October 27 meeting she had contacted conference services to reserve Karls 101 for Monday, November 28, and for Tuesday, November 29, Karls 102 had been reserved. The meeting times for both dates would be 3:30 to 5:00 pm. The format for the open forums will be finalized at the November 10 meeting.
Discussion then moved to the draft document provided by Dr. D. Wayne Mitchell regarding infrastructure revision and improvement. In order to further encourage research efforts and productivity, the Task Force felt that comments similar to those regarding infrastructure contained in this draft document should be incorporated into the Task Force's final report to the President. A subcommittee was then formed to seek comments and suggestions and edit the draft document for the Task Force's review and approval. The subcommittee consists of Drs. Mitchell, Masterson, Doelling and Giedd.
At this time the final subgroup report, East Asian Studies was presented by Dr. Marc Cooper. After much discussion, the Task Force voted to re-title the emphasis area to Global Perspectives. It was also agreed upon to seek the input of Dr. Beat Kernen, Chair of the International Task Force to assist in completing the research and scholarship area template before posting it to the Future's Task Force website for review and comment by the faculty.
The next meeting of the Task Force will be Thursday, November 17 at 3:30 pm in PSU 317. The main topics for the next meeting will be the review of the faculty comments received from the website initiative and the finalizing of the format for the open forums to be held on November 28 and 29.
