Missouri State University

Harassing/Threatening Calls

  • Harassing, obscene or threatening telephone calls are illegal and are punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment.
  • Missouri State University takes this action seriously and will investigate and prosecute documented cases of telephone abuse to the fullest extent of the law.
  • Determine if the call, or calls, are isolated or random in nature. Keep a log (dates and exact time) of the calls over a period of several days. If the caller leaves a message on your voice mail or answering machine, do not erase the message. The message may be useful in identifying the caller.
  • If the caller threatens you, the police should be contacted at 911 immediately.
  • Don't talk. What the caller really wants is an audience.
  • Hang up gently if the caller doesn't say anything, on the first obscene word, or if the caller doesn't identify himself or herself to your satisfaction. Don't engage in any conversation.
  • If the calls become constant or persist over an extended period, you should then file a report with Public Safety at 417-836-5509.
  • To establish a call trace, a police report must be filed. Once a report number has been issued, the University must contact the service provider to request that a trace be placed. Contact Telecommunication Services at 417-836-8580 for assistance with contacting the appropriate service provider.
  • Please be aware that investigations of this nature may rely on the technical assistance of the service provider as well as your cooperation. This process may take a few days before being completed.
  • Call trace information will be given directly to the police. The information will not be given directly to the person filing the complaint. This policy is to protect the innocent.
  • Telecommunication Services may have the ability to retrieve information from University call records that will assist in apprehending the caller(s). To obtain such information, the student, staff, or faculty member must contact the office of internal audit and compliance, 417-836-5108. A police report may be required before records will be disclosed.
