PED 100 Fitness for Living
PHILOSOPHY:
- Lecture: To present from an academic and technological perspective the underlying theories of health/wellness and physical fitness subject matter
- Laboratory: To apply the theories presented in lecture to practice via activity intervention and internet learning activities.
The scope and sequence of the lecture classes are structured to deal with the scientific and practical aspects of neuromuscular activity for university-age students. The laboratory classes provide the students with an experiential, activity based approach to fitness and wellness plus opportunities to further reinforce subject matter content applications via scheduled internet assignments. The students are involved in experiential activities and discussions, which emphasize both physiological and intellectual processes. The lab activities are designed to put into practical application the theories, concepts and information presented in the lectures. As a result, the students are exposed to a variety of experiences emphasizing both immediate and long term values related to health and wellness.
In essence, this course is designed to illustrate the potential biophysical values of health and physical fitness, and the negative ramifications of a sedentary and/or high-risk lifestyle. Consequently, the course will assist you in making intelligent value decisions concerning health and physical fitness.
Because the laboratory component of the course is experiential learning in nature, grading will not be based upon one's physical status, physical performance, or physical improvement. The ultimate objective is to help the individual improve the quality of his/her lifestyle in order to achieve her/his highest level of fitness/wellness not only during, but especially after the completion of the semester.
