Letter From the Editor:

Welcome to this online journal published on the Missouri State University Department of Nursing Web Site. The purpose of this online journal is to highlight change projects completed by nursing students. The nursing program at Missouri State University is community-based. Our students have approximately 60% of their clinical experiences in a variety of facilities and agencies that are not acute care focused. Nursing students work with an agency preceptor to identify, analyze, research, and implement change projects within that particular agency. A change project is any identified unaddressed need or issue, which if implemented, would facilitate the organization or service provided by the agency. A synopsis of student projects is published at the first and middle of each month, with previous summaries archived by title for review. Each summary includes the project and purpose, the leadership theory used to implement the project, any challenges experienced with project implementation, and the project outcome.

Dr. Sims-Giddens teaches the Leadership and Management in Nursing Course in the BSN program at Missouri State University. Believing leadership is an inherent responsibility of nurses in health care access and delivery, nursing students are encouraged to engage in activities to better understand the professional role of nursing. This practical application of classroom discussion for students results in student empowerment, active learning, and an improved quality of life for the residents of our community.
