To assist students to achieve academically and socially in the school environment by promoting health and wellness for all students. Student Health Services will work collaboratively with students, colleagues, parents and community to ensure a safe, health environment where continuous learning can occur.
The school nurse strengthens and facilitates educational process by identifying, modifying or re-mediating health-related barriers to learning. This includes: appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation management and/or referral activities; serves as direct link between physicians, families and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care of students; and provides relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, staff and others concerning health related issues.
Prevention of childhood injuries, substance abuse prevention education, disease prevention education, required vaccinations for schoolchildren, emergency care measures, medication administration, lice screenings, and care for asthmatics, diabetics, autistic children, pregnant teenagers, homebound student, and special needs students.
All services are free of charge to students within the Springfield Public Schools District. Finances are allocated through district-wide property tax upon real estate.
The types of providers vary by school. Volunteers, para-professionals and licensed nurses staff one of the fifty-three schools within the district. Note: This does not indicate a one-to-one nurse to school ratio. Some schools have two nurses on staff while some do not have a basal school nurse.
