Mission

To increase literacy in Southwest Missouri by providing free tutoring and learning services to those unable to read, write or compute at levels necessary to function fully and contribute successfully on the job, in their communities and in society as a whole.

 
Purpose

Ozarks Literacy Council offers tutoring for literacy, numeracy, English as a Second Language, GED Preparation, Citizenship Preparation, and corrections literacy. The OLC welcomes and trains volunteers.

 
Services Provided
  • Basic literacy – uses one-on-one tutoring to enhance adults’ reading level.
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages – teaches English to new residents of all nationalities through small group sessions.
  • Child/Family Literacy – combines child and adult tutoring to create new values within the family unit.
  • Reading Advocacy – stresses the belief that reading is a positive skill for all citizens in the Springfield area.
 
Cost

Ozarks Literacy Council is a not-for-profit organization ran by a board of directors, but relies on volunteers for the vast majority of its accomplishments. It has been providing free services for thirty years.
