The Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in music, is intended for students with a music background who wish to explore the discipline in its theoretical, historical, and performance context, within a degree program which allows extensive study in a particularly broad range of fields.
The Bachelor of Music Degree (Performance) is designed to prepare the student for performance careers, private teaching, and for graduate study in the specialized area. All candidates for this degree, including transfer students, are admitted on a trial basis contingent upon completion of an approved jury hearing by the end of the second semester of study.
This degree is designed to develop the student's ability in composition and to prepare the student for graduate study in the specialized area. All candidates for the Bachelor of Music in Composition degree are admitted on a trial basis contingent upon the completion of an approved jury hearing at the completion of theory IV and piano level 4. The Composition area consists of both undergraduate and graduate majors who are trained to write music in a wide variety of styles and genres ranging from commercial to avant garde, and from large ensemble works to electroacoustic/multi-media pieces. Composition majors (as well as other student composers) have access to our state-of-the-art Electronic Music Studio located in Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.
This degree is designed to develop triple threats (actor/singer/dancers) who possess a strong foundation in the requisite skills to pursue careers as performing professionals in musical theatre, including musicals and variety productions.
The Music Department offers minors in music to complement degree programs in other departments. The following minors are available: Bachelor of Arts (including the Jazz Studies Minor) and Bachelor of Science.
