The MSU string project gives Springfield area children in the second, third and fourth grade the opportunity to learn to play the violin, viola or cello. The project also gives college music students the opportunity for a hands-on teaching experience under the supervision of an experienced string teacher. These students gain valuable field knowledge that they can apply later as orchestra teachers or private instructors.   In addition, the project seeks to give area string programs a boost by allowing more children to learn at an earlier age than through existing programs. Because of the modest costs of study and the starting age that is three years ahead of the public school programs, more students are offered this opportunity at an age that is optimal for learning.

The string project began in 2005 with a pilot group of ten children, and two college student teachers. Now in its second season, the project involves over 25 youngsters and five college student teachers. Students meet twice a week for small group or orchestra rehearsals.

The project could not have started and survived without major assistance from John. Q Hammons, John Jones and Sarah Kuhlman, and Dee Wampler. Additional assistance has come from Hoover Music, Andy and Elizabeth Johnston, Silver Dollar City, Rountree Elementary School, Allison Steiner, anonymous donors, and Missouri State University.
