UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES

Bachelor of Arts (BA)

The Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in music, is intended for students with a music background who wish to explore the discipline in its theoretical, historical, and performance context, within a degree program which allows extensive study in a particularly broad range of fields.

Bachelor of Music (BM) - Performance

The Bachelor of Music Degree (Performance) is designed to prepare the student for performance careers, private teaching, and for graduate study in the specialized area. All candidates for this degree, including transfer students, are admitted on a trial basis contingent upon completion of an approved jury hearing by the end of the second semester of study.

Bachelor of Music (BM) - Composition

This degree is designed to develop the student's ability in composition and to prepare the student for graduate study in the specialized area. All candidates for the Bachelor of Music in Composition degree are admitted on a trial basis contingent upon the completion of an approved jury hearing at the completion of theory IV and piano level 4. The Composition area consists of both undergraduate and graduate majors who are trained to write music in a wide variety of styles and genres ranging from commercial to avant garde, and from large ensemble works to electroacoustic/multi-media pieces. Composition majors (as well as other student composers) have access to our state-of-the-art Electronic Music Studio located in Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre (BFA in Musical Theatre)

This degree is designed to develop triple threats (actor/singer/dancers) who possess a strong foundation in the requisite skills to pursue careers as performing professionals in musical theatre, including musicals and variety productions.

Music Minors

The Music Department offers minors in music to complement degree programs in other departments. The following minors are available: Bachelor of Arts (including the Jazz Studies Minor) and Bachelor of Science.

Bachelor of Music Education (BME)

The Missouri State Music Department offers a 127-hour Bachelor of Music Education degree.
BME Students can:

  • Earn a Missouri Teaching Certificate in K-12 Instrumental or Vocal Music
  • Be provided a 4-Year degree program of study (including 1 semester of student teaching)
  • Experience 125 hours of teaching experiences in addition to the student teaching experience
  • Participate in nationally acclaimed performing ensembles
  • Study in their applied area with nationally recognized performers
  • Be introduced to state of the art technology as an integral part of their degree

GRADUATE STUDIES

 The Department of Music at Missouri State University offers two degree programs at the graduate level:
 
The Master of Music degree develops professional competence in the evaluation and dissemination of knowledge in such disciplines as conducting, pedagogy, music performance, theory and composition, and music education.

This program provides teachers an opportunity to enhance their qualifications in both professional education and subject matter areas appropriate to their teaching fields. Music is one of 20 different subject areas of emphasis that may be selected. A core of courses is required in the professional education areas, and music courses complete the degree.

Music Department Standards

The entering graduate student in music must meet all requirements for admission to graduate studies. In addition, students must have taken the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and have their scores on file for review.
