May 2, 2010 at 4 p.m. in HHPA

Missouri State University’s Music Department continues its tradition of an annual Masterworks concert, as the combined Choirs and University Symphony present a staged version of Mendelssohn’s great oratorio, Elijah, considered by some to be the most dramatic oratorio ever written. The work contains a narrative of the events in the life of the Old Testament prophet, and will be performed with lighting and stage effects to depict the Biblical saga of Elijah and the Priests of Baal. Soloists are all Missouri State graduates or students: Sarah Tannehill, soprano, from Kansas City; Jennifer Powell, mezzo soprano, from Kansas City; Michael Spyres, tenor, now under engagement with the Berlin Opera and La Scala; and Joshua Markley, baritone, in the title role of Elijah. Set design and staging for the concert are under the direction of Byrne Blackwood, Professor Emeritus of Theatre, Missouri State University.
