Carolyn Smith, vocal instructor at MSU, received her B.M. (Vocal Music Education), and her M.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Music, Drama, and English) from the University of North Texas.
A soprano soloist with many roles to her credit in opera, oratorio, and musical theater, she has performed with Hamilton Operatic, Opera Waikato, and Auckland Opera in New Zealand, and Denton Light Opera and Denton Community Theater in Denton, Texas. She has performed two world premier roles of re-discovered parlor operas by Giuseppe Balducci: Lauretta in
Il Noce di Benevento, and Evangelina in
I Gelosi, and played Sister Mary Amnesia in both Nunsense and Nusense II, Laurey in
Oklahoma and Maria in
West Side Story. She has performed soprano solos in
Messiah and
Creation with Quire Riversong in Hamilton, New Zealand. Other roles include: Irene Malloy in
Hello, Dolly, Mrs. Anderson in
A Little Night Music, and Domina in
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Before coming to Springfield, Mrs. Smith was adjunct professor of music at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, where she taught voice, choral conducting, and music appreciation. Prior to that position, she was Assistant Professor of Music Education at University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, where she taught music education classes and directed the university choir. During her time at these positions, she had a private voice studio as well.
Mrs. Smith has been teaching music for nearly 30 years. She has been an elementary music specialist, a middle school and high school choir director, a vocal specialist at the high school level, and a choir director for churches, as well as teaching at the university level.
In the area of musical theater, Mrs. Smith has directed many children’s productions, directed the chorus for community theater productions of
Evita and
Pirates of Penzance, and directed a musical revue of Hamilton Operatic’s productions.
Contemporary a cappella music is another area of interest to Mrs. Smith. She has been very involved in performing and directing contemporary pop a cappella music ensembles, performing in a cappella mixed and women’s ensembles, and coaching and directing men’s and women’s barbershop music quartets and choruses, and women’s contemporary music ensembles.
