Mountain Grove Campus Task Force

Infrastructure Summary of Input

The following is primarily based on information that was solicited through an email request and online form sent to the various user groups of this campus.

  • Department of Fruit Science
  • Mid-America Viticulture and Enology Center
  • Mountain Grove Field Service Center
  • Mountain Grove Physical Plant
  • Paul Evans Library of Fruit Science
  • Non-grape commercial fruit growers
  • Grape and Wine Program Research Committee

5.  What facility changes or enhancements are needed?

a. Planning

Campus funding needs to be revisited on a regular basis in order to determine and prioritize infrastructure needs and make recommendations. There needs to be system or workflow in place in order to achieve an integrated, intercommunicated approach to resource management based on the goals of the campus including all campus units.

b. Campus Maintenance System

There needs to be a documented process to handle work requests. The Missouri State University Physical Plant maintains a Maintenance Request Site with electronic work order forms. The Mountain Grove Campus grounds and buildings are listed in this system. This system is used to keep track of work requests. It appears also to be a method in which Physical Plant administrators can see if needs are being met or if additional funding and personnel are needed. It would also allow Springfield Outreach Instructors and personnel to request maintenance. At present this system has not been used by our campus personnel nor do we have a system that documents and prioritizes work requests. The physical plant foreman at the Mountain Grove Campus said we are free to use this system, and the administrative secretaries and head librarian have expressed interest in doing so.

An alternative plan is a regularly scheduled maintenance needs assessment (walk through) by the Director.

c. Field and Research Area and Grounds

  1. Three utility vehicles (EZ-go, Gator, Mule) should be purchased and some of the older pickups phased out - going from 3 to one 3/4 ton 4WD pickup with trailer. A bobcat with forks would be useful in loading and unloading fruit in the processing facilities and a post auger and backhoe attachments for the bobcat would be useful in the field for construction of trellises and irrigation systems. A budget and rotation system is needed to replace all tractors on a 10 year cycles.
  2. Farm vehicles should have thorough and regular inspections to maintain safe operation by out staff and field crew.
  3. New Maintenance and Repair Shop building is needed where vehicles, tractors and equipment can be maintained, repaired, cleaned particularly during inclement weather to better utilize the workforce. This has been incorporated into the visioning guide for the campus.
  4. There are several field plantings that receive poor maintenance and therefore are not available for research, therefore field plantings should be prioritized and the low value plantings should be removed to make better and more efficient use of our resources.
  5. Irrigation is available for plantings but it is not reliable (line leaks, lack of automamtic fill to the supply tower).
  6. The main parking lot I the heart of campus is unsightly and unsafe. Improvement of this parking lot is already incorporated in the Mountain Grove Campus Visioning Guide.
  7. The development of educational plantings and grounds has been incorporated into the Mountain Grove Campus visioning guide. It is important that the campus reflect best practices in horticulture because the heart of the research and outreach mission of the campus is plant science. Additional funds for grounds development and maintenance should be made available for public education planting development and maintenance. A landscape/greenhouse manager with expertise in horticulture is critical to this development.
  8. The campus greenspace would be made accessible and useable for both educational programs and general campus use if a walking trail were installed and maintained on the 12- acre campus area east of highway 95 campus. A plan for a walking trail has already been incorporated in the Mountain Grove Campus Visioning Guide.

d. Building and Renovations

  1. Renovations of the experimental winery and fruit processing education building to accommodate Mountain Grove Cellars for the short-term.
  2. Dedication of the Classroom Building solely for MVEC personnel in the short term and new buildings to house MVEC staff and laboratories in the long term.
  3. Adequate student living quarters either on site or close to campus.
  4. More greenhouse space is needed for the Grape Importation and Indexing Program. This has been incorporated into the Mountain Grove Visioning Guide.
  5. Some laboratories have no direct supervisor so there is no control of supplies, equipment and clutter.
  6. Shepard Hall lab space needs to be updated and/or expanded to accommodate the Grape Importation and Indexing Program. A tissue culture/ lab/growth room is needed for this program.
  7. Adequately staffed and supplied diagnostic clinic.
  8. Adequately staffed food chemistry lab could greatly expand both the applied and the basic research programs currently underway.
  9. Bathroom facilities (regularly maintained outhouses or other seasonal facility) needs to be constructed in proximity of the pavilion for public use.
  10. Larger, fully digitally equipped meeting room for 250 people tables and chairs.

6.  Any other issues you would like to share relevant to the first charge?

  1. Increase in the funds available for temporary labor during peak seasons.
  2. Establish a campus advisory committee that meets regularly and issues recommendations based on the meeting to all campus personnel.
  3. Campus status should be retained as it allows us prime virtual real estate in the University website.
  4. Faculty and staff should be required to write and submit grants and be given the release time and support to do so.
  5. Travel funds for faculty are not adequate.
  6. Loss of the research winery is likely to have a negative impact on enology research.
  7. The task force needs to give a thorough and honest consideration as to whether or not the development of a world-class plant science research program is realistic at a location such as Mtn. Grove.
  8. Closer ties with University of Missouri and closer working relationship between MVEC and Fruit Science.
  9. Safety training for everyone. Training in the operation of all equipment the employee is expected to use (tractors, mowers, augers, etc.) Regular first aid and cpr classes offered on site or through distance delivery systems.
  10. There should be a staff orientation procedure for new temporary employees, new graduate students, new post docs that introduces those people to faculty and staff, tour the facilities, and go over procedures for vehicles, time card submission, etc. This could be written down so that the orientation could be easily given as people come in and move out.
