Department of Merchandising and Fashion Design

Student Opportunities and Services

Student organizations

As a student in fashion, interior design or family and consumer sciences education, you are welcome to join any of the many active student organizations in the department. In addition to great student organizations, the department hosts a variety of programs that showcase your talent and services to develop your skills.

American Society of Interior Designers

Students in interior design are encouraged to join the Missouri State University chapter of American Society of Interior Designers. Members of the student chapter regularly visit area design firms, meet local designers and learn more about suppliers in the region. Participation in area career days in Kansas is also available.

Association of Fashion and Design

As a student-run organization, Association of Fashion and Design brings together fashion design and fashion merchandising majors. Collaboration like this between all these creative and strategic thinkers results in events like the MSU Fashion Show, design and merchandising competitions, and Dallas Career Day. aFAD also hosts regular meetings each month.

Participating in community projects and networking with guest speakers is a regular part of the FACS Ed experience. Students planning to major in family and consumer sciences education are encouraged to join FACS Ed and participate in such projects as Shoeboxes for Soldiers and working with the Developmental Center of the Ozarks. Recent meetings have included discussions about the Life Smarts high school curriculum and the Pro Start Culinary Program.

Missouri State Fashion Show

The MSU Fashion Show, held each spring, is a pinnacle event featuring both senior collections and original designs from the FID program. More than 1,000 guests attend this annual event at the Springfield Expo Center. VIP invitees are offered exclusive incentives, like a behind-the-scenes look prior to the show, and are invited to browse vendor booths and network.

MSU Interior Design Senior Show

Each spring, friends, family, prospective students and industry professionals are invited to Missouri State to view the best work of senior interior design students. The show is part of the requirements to pass HID 424 Business Practices and Senior Show. Students also study for and take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification practice exam as part of the course, while planning and executing the show. As part of the show, students display portfolios of their interior design work completed at MSU.

Career Center

You can learn more about career and internship opportunities in these creative areas through the Career Center located in the College of Business in Glass Hall.

Study away

Study fashion in Paris, or take architectural and historical tours of China, Italy or Greece! These are opportunities of a lifetime, and the fashion and interior design department tries to offer at least one study tour each year to various European and domestic locations.
