Teaching and Research Areas

Dr. Pauline Nugent is a Professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages where she teaches courses at all levels primarily in LATIN, GREEK, and HEBREW, and occasionally in CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY, COMPARATIVE MYTHOLOGY, HERO AND QUEST, STUDENT SUCCESS, WOMEN IN THE ANCIENT WORLD, and COPING WITH CULTURE—with emphasis in French, German, Spanish and Japanese. Earlier, she taught Latin, French and German at high school, both in Europe and in the US. She launched her teaching career in New Orleans, as a teenager, with a 1stGrade Class of 68 seven-year-olds Her passion is decidedly teaching, regardless of level, location or subject.  Her research interests focus on Patristics—the study of the Church Fathers—with special interest in St. Jerome and the early centuries of the Christian Church.  Having written a Dissertation, under the direction of Dr. Douglass Parker, entitled Jerome’s Prologues to His Commentaries on the Prophets, she continues to explore that rich field of research, delivering papers at the International Conference on Patristic Studies at Oxford, UK, and currently writing a book entitled Jerome’s Commentary on Daniel. A second field of great interest is pedagogy, both ancient and modern, with special attention to the art of teaching.
