Tanzania 2008 brochure

Course DescriptionTanzania

This course examines the conservation of natural resources and the cultural geography of northern Tanzania. These topics will be examined within the context of sustainable development. The first topic that will be examined is the conflict between local people and the national parks over economic benefits of the parks. The second topic is that of land use concerns between the current farmers in the area, the game control management, and the influx of new residents seeking farmland.

In many parts of East Africa, sustainable development is approached through community conservation of natural resources used by both the local populations and the native fauna. The conflict between these communities and the national parks and reserves is a good example of an issue concerning the use of natural resources and the economic benefits derived from them that are needed to achieve sustainable development.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

Understand the geography (physical and cultural), history, and economy of northern Tanzania and how each is related to issues of sustainable development

Evaluate the role of national parks and tourism in the economic and social development of Tanzania and of East Africa

Evaluate the human impact on the region
