Foreign Language Placement Test

Students with foreign language experience (typically one or more years of high school study, or its equivalent) in French, German, or Spanish, but who have not earned college credit in these languages, must take the foreign language placement exam prior to enrolling in language courses. The foreign language placement test can be found online at http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/, and should be taken before you attend SOAR. You will receive your placement scores as soon as you finish the exam, and a copy will be added to your student records. Placement scores remain valid for the duration of enrollment as undergraduate student. During the first week of classes, instructors will ensure that students were placed in the appropriate class for their level of competency.

If you place into a 102-level class or higher, you can receive credit for the classes you place out of if you complete the class recommended by your exam score with at least a B and apply to the Department of Modern and Classical Languages to receive credit. (Credit is not automatically granted.) Heritage learners or others who place very high on the placement exam and would like to inquire about placement beyond the 202 level may contact the Department of Modern and Classical Languages for a personalized evaluation of their proficiency.

If you earned college credit and it transfers to Missouri State as a Spanish (SPN), French (FRN), or German (GRM) 101, 102, or 201 course, you do not need to take the foreign language placement exam. Any subsequent language course you wish to take will begin at the next highest course level. For more information about the foreign language placement exam, visit www.missouristate.edu/soar/flexam.htm.

Students interested in placement and credit in languages not covered by the placement exam (including native speakers of other non-English languages) should consult with the Department Head of the Modern and Classical Languages Department prior to enrolling in courses. The department will provide individualized assessment and placement tests covering reading, writing, listening, comprehension, and culture in the target language.

All language students that have been assessed and placed can obtain retroactive credit (3-18 credit hours) provided they complete the class they placed into with a grade of B or higher and apply to the department to receive the retroactive credit. Credit will not be automatically granted.

Consult with the Modern and Classical Languages department head regarding any exceptions.
