GENERAL FUNCTION

The Associate Provost for Student Success is a part of the leadership team for academic affairs and assists the Provost and other Associate Provosts in the operation of the Office of Provost. Areas of responsibility include fostering high quality undergraduate education and supporting the University’s enrollment management efforts by focusing on various student success initiatives. The Associate Provost for Student Success supervises various student support services and performs many Dean-like responsibilities for undeclared students. The Associate Provost for Student Success works to ensure that quality educational programs are provided to students and is an important liaison in communicating and collaborating with administrators, faculty, students, and other constituents of the University.  

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
 
Education: A terminal degree is required.

Experience:  Tenure as a faculty member at the University is required and a record of success in all areas - teaching, research, and service - must be evidenced. Academic administrative or leadership/internship experience is required.

Skills: Demonstrated leadership ability is required, including a demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with University administrators, faculty, staff, and students. Outstanding oral and written communication skills are required. Effective interpersonal skills and sensitivity to issues affecting a wide range of constituencies are required. Experience in personnel management is preferred.

Other: Requires a demonstrated commitment to high quality undergraduate education. An understanding of federal and state legislation and compliance issues that affect delivery of quality educational services to students is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Helps to ensure the achievement of the mission of the University by assisting the Provost and other Associate provosts in the operation of the Office of the Provost.

2. Participates in the leadership team in policy development, process, and decisions relating to undergraduate and graduate education.

3. Works with other offices, including Institutional Research, to oversee the University’s enrollment management efforts and focuses on student learning outcomes/achievement, and student retention and graduation.

4. Contributes to initiatives designed to improve student success and retention including learning communities and the first year experience.

5. Performs most of the Dean functions for undeclared majors as well as students who are conditionally admitted to the University.

6. Makes scholastic action decisions for undeclared students by hearing appeals of undeclared students who are suspended and hearing the requests for readmission of conditionally admitted students who have failed to meet the conditions of their enrollment.

7. Supervises the Director of the Academic Advisement Center, the Director of the Achievement Center for Intercollegiate Athletics, the Director of the Writing Center, the Director of the Student Success program, including the Introduction to University Life class (IDS110) and the Partners in Education (PIE) program.

8. Serves in conjunction with the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education in fostering collaboration and coordination with Student Affairs.

9. Promotes a positive image and maintains effective relationships for the Office of the Provost by representing the Provost at various meetings, communicating with University administrators, faculty, staff, and students in matters related to undergraduate education, and leading or serving on selected University committees and task forces.

10. Ensures that miscellaneous assignments related to academic affairs are completed in the best interest of the University by accepting and accomplishing tasks which are delegated by the Provost.

SUPERVISION

The Associate Provost for Student Success is supervised by the Provost and supervises professional and support staff.
