GENERAL FUNCTION

The Maintenance and Repair Assistant performs skilled and semi-skilled work related to the general maintenance and repair of the Plaster Student Union facilities and selected equipment, including wall, door, and trim repair, drywall patching and painting, replacing light bulbs, making basic repairs to audio-visual equipment, and maintaining the Games Center bowling machines. In conjunction with the Associate Director of the Plaster Student Union, the Maintenance and Repair Assistant identifies maintenance needs, submits work orders, and follows up on repairs to make sure work is completed. In addition the Maintenance and Repair Assistant assists the Associate Director with assigned projects related to the general maintenance, repair, and operation of the Plaster Student Union.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education A high school diploma or the equivalent is required.

Experience Two years experience in general facility maintenance and repair or related work is required. Additionally, experience or certification as an AMF mechanic is preferred.

Skills Mechanical aptitude is required. Skill in the use of small hand and power tools, mechanical equipment, and materials applicable to completing basic repairs and maintenance projects is required. The ability to use a computer is preferred.

Effort Requires the ability to climb ladders, work in small crawl spaces, and lift 50-60 pounds on a daily basis. Prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching is required on a daily basis. Requires a full range of physical motion. Must be able to move throughout the Plaster Student Union, including climbing stairs, in order to provide maintenance work.

Other The scope of the position requires exposure to and the use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, paints, stains, and lubricants common to mechanical work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Supports the operation of the Plaster Student Union by conducting routine inspections of the Student Union building for maintenance and operational issues.

2. Works with the Associate Director of the Plaster Student Union to address maintenance needs, whether through personal project plans or work-order submission.

3. Monitors and supports Physical Plant projects in the facility and keeps Associate Director informed of progress and issues.

4. Plans, executes, and documents projects related to the maintenance and repair of the Plaster Student Union as assigned by the Associate Director, including, but not limited to, wall, door, and trim repair, drywall patching and painting, replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles, and making basic repairs to audio-visual equipment.

5. Maintains an inventory of tools and supplies necessary for the completion of tasks, stores all chemicals correctly, maintains MSDA sheets on file as required by law, and keeps tools in good repair.

6. Supports the Student Union by coordinating the identification, collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, including used light bulbs, according to university policy.

7. Assists the Associate Director with conducting the annual building inventory.

8. Supports Campus Recreation by adjusting, repairing, and maintaining the Golf Cart and Games Center bowling and billiards equipment, including, but not limited to billiards tables, bowling lanes and lane-cleaning equipment, automatic scorers, and pins and pin setters and advising the Director of Campus recreation of the need for new and/or replacement equipment by maintaining a record of maintenance performed on current equipment and requisition lists for parts.

9. Contributes to the development of competent and effective student employees through hiring, training, and supervising qualified students for special projects (i.e., paint crew).

10. Attends Student Union staff meetings and all other meetings as assigned by the Associate Director.

11. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Associate Director of Plaster Student Union.

12. Contributes to the overall success of Plaster Student Union by performing all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Maintenance and Repair Assistant is supervised by the Associate Director of the Student Union and exercises supervision of student employees for special projects.

Factor 1: Educational Requirements of the Job

Level 2 - 100 Points: The job requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

Factor 2: Skill Requirements - Craft and Trade Skills

Level 3 - 550 Points: General mechanical or technical aptitude and specific knowledge and experience in a skill, craft, or trade. The ability to perform standard procedures, operations, and/or operate specific equipment, that is required through at least two years of experience and previous training is required.

Factor 3: Managerial Responsibility

Level 2 - 75 Points: Irregular but occasional responsibility to direct the work of student workers or temporary or part-time workers. The nature of supervision is largely confined to assigning tasks to others and does not include a full range of supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities at this level may include tracking budgeted spending, limited purchasing authority, and tracking inventory.

Factor 4: Guidelines

Level 2 - 50 Points: Specific guidelines and established routines exist, but some judgment in applying guidelines and deviating from standards must be exercised. The number and similarity of guidelines and work situations requires the employee to use judgmentin locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines, references, and procedures for application and in making minor deviations to adapt guidelines in specific cases. At this level, the employee may also determine which of severl alternatives to use. Situations to which the existing guidelines cannot be applied or significant proposed deviations from the guidelines are referred to a supervisor.

Factor 5: Contacts

Level 3 - 100 Points: The purpose is to advise or counsel students, coworkers, or the general public, or to plan or coordinate work efforts with other employees who are working toward common goals and where relationships are generally cooperative. Contacts are moderately structured and routine.

Factor 6: Work Environment

Level 2 - 40 Points: The work area involves moderate discomfort and/or risk such as that from moving machinery, occasional work with hazardous substances, or moderate levels of noise. The work may require wearing of protective gear. The work area is generally adequately lighted and ventilated, but may involve uncomfortable temperatures at times.

Factor 7: Physical Demands

Level 3 - 100 Points: Work requires continuous moderate with some strenuous physical exertion including standing, climbing, crawling, and regular lifting of objects over 50 pounds.

Factor 8: Responsibility for Facilities and Resources

Level 2 - 40 Points: Jobs at this level might require frequent but routine responsibility for facility security, public safety, equipment, or money.

Factor 9: Complexity

Level 3 - 450 Points: The work includes various duties involving different and unrelated processes and methods. Decisions regarding what needs to be done depend upon knowledge of the duries, priorities, commitments, policies, and program goals of the supervisor and the department and involve the analysis of the subject, phase, or issues involved in each project or assignment, and the course of action may have to be selected from many alternatives. The work involves elements that must be identified and analyzed to discern interrelationships.
