TITLE Producer/Writer - TV

The Producer/Writer organizes and scripts video productions to achieve the desired objectives and outcomes, evaluates program objectives and target audiences, and coordinates the development of program format and content to attain desired goals and stay within budget, time, and facility limitations. The Producer/Writer directs the efforts of production crews, graphic designers, and other participants involved in video productions and works with a variety of University clients, including administrators, students, faculty, and staff, as well as various constituencies, project participants, other professional electronic media members, and the general public.
Education: A Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in Television Production, Electronic Media, or a related field is required.
Experience: Three years of responsible experience in television production is required. Demonstrated videography and/or non-linear editing experience is preferred. Strong writing and producing skills are required.
Skills: Demonstrated creative and technical skills are required to meet artistic, technical, and practical production challenges. Excellent oral and written communications and interpersonal skills are required. Effective organizational, administrative, and supervisory abilities are required. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision in all aspects of the job is required. Must be familiar with multiple script formats and production styles.
Effort: Must have excellent visual acuity (20/20 vision or corrected to 20/20), hearing ability within normal limits, and be able to carry up to thirty pounds of equipment without lifting devices for distances up to one-hundred yards.
Other: The scope of the job occasionally requires attendance of evening and/or weekend activities and occasional travel to workshops, seminars, and university events.
1. Promotes a positive image of the University which conforms to either the University’s mission or Broadcast Services’ mission through the creation, development, and production of video presentations by functioning as producer, writer, and/or director, videographer, or editor, as assigned.
2. Develops a concept into a script for a video production by conferring with clients to determine their needs/goals, negotiating acceptable modifications to clients’ concepts by explaining production plans and procedures, determining the most effective approach for the video production, calculating budgetary and associated costs and requirements, and proposing a schedule and deadline for production.
3. Prepares for production of video presentations by planning and scheduling productions, analyzing projects for artistic, technical, time, and material requirements, determining equipment, crew, and location needs, and selecting talent for audio and/or video performances.
4. Supervises the production of video presentations by working independently or with a director by exercising creative and technical control of video/audio recording, supervising the production crew, directing amateur or professional talent for voice or physical presence, and approving final scripts and edit decisions.
5. Enhances the production of video presentations by creating concepts for graphics to complement the audio/visual message, developing or supervising the creation of graphic artwork, and working with commercial facilities as necessary when technical resources unavailable at the University are required.
6. Completes the production of video presentations by selecting appropriate background music suitable to the theme of the production, the participants, and the intended audience, obtaining clearance to use visual content and copyrighted materials, and working with commercial recording or production studios toward the creation of desired special effects within specifications.
7. Facilitates the production of video presentations by supervising the construction or modification of sets for studio productions, selecting suitable settings for location productions, and setting up and operating video equipment or assisting with the staging and presentation of productions on and off campus.
8. Facilitates an efficient office operation by assisting with maintaining files of tapes, digital media, graphics, and special effects, keeping records of expenses, supplies, and other associated costs, and providing required reports of production costs and inventories as directed.
9. Assists in the development of an effective staff of student employees by training and supervising student employees in departmental operations, assigning work, establishing deadlines, and monitoring performances.
10. Ensures the operational condition of departmental equipment by recommending routine repair and preventive maintenance as appropriate and arranging for repairs or services by qualified technicians.
11. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or conferences as required by the Manager, Programming and Production.
12. Contributes to the overall success of the Broadcast Services Unit by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
The Producer/Writer is supervised by the Manager, Programming and Production-TV and supervises student employees.

Knowledge requirements may also include a limited amount of related work experience. Alternatively, equivalent knowledge requirements at this level include a non-technical or general Bachelor?s degree requirement with a moderate level of additional related work experience or a non-specific Master?s degree requirement with some related work experience.
Factor 2: Supervisory Responsibility
Level 2 - 130 Points: Regular, but limited, supervision, training, or directing the work assignments of (a) small numbers of student, part-time or temporary workers, or (b) one or more permanent, full-time employees. The nature of supervision is largely confined to scheduling work and assigning tasks. Supervision at this level typically does not include a full range of supervisory responsibilities, and supervisory duties typically do not consume a large portion of the work day.
Factor 3: Interactions with Others
Level 3 - 250 Points: The purpose of interactions is to advise or counsel others to solve recurring and structured problems, and/or to plan or coordinate work efforts with other employees who are working toward common goals in situations where relationships are generally cooperative. Interactions are moderately structured and routine and may involve employees in different functions, students, and/or the general public. These types of interactions require normal interpersonal skills.
Factor 4: Job Controls and Guidelines
Level 2 - 250 Points: The employee carries out a group of procedures using the general methods and desired results indicated by the supervisor. Typically, standard operating procedures, handbooks, and/or reference manuals exist for most procedures, but the employee must select from the most appropriate of several guidelines and make minor adjustments to methods. Unforeseen situations are normally referred to others for resolution. Assignments are related in function and objective, but processes, procedures, or software varies from one assignment to another. Based on the assignment, the employee uses diverse, but conventional, methods, techniques, or approaches.
