GENERAL FUNCTION

The Assistant Vice President, Student Academic Support Services is responsible for the coordination of all student academic support services provided by the units of Career Services, Counseling and Testing Center, Retention Services, Multicultural Student Services and International Student Services. The Assistant Vice President, Student Academic Support Services also serves as a Director of one of the units within Student Academic Support Services.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master's degree is required. A Doctorate degree is preferred.

Experience: At least five years of successful and progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education is required. Specific experience with student retention, international student affairs, multi-cultural programming, student counseling, or career development is preferred.

Skills: Requires exceptional organizational, management, budgetary and leadership skills in order to direct the diverse operations of the units of Student Academic Support Services. Strong oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal as well as decision-making and conflict management skills are required. Computer literacy is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ensures that the units of Student Academic Support Services contribute to the attainment of the institutional mission of the Division of Student Affairs by developing a strategic plan which coordinates and focuses unit efforts towards the stated mission, reviewing and approving unit plans, goals and objectives for compliance with the Division's mission, designing and implementing systems for guiding efforts towards expected outcomes, and evaluating progress towards their accomplishment.

2. Enables the units of Student Academic Support Services to perform their assigned tasks by providing specific guidance regarding budget development, coordinating the development of individual unit budgets, submitting a budget which includes and represents the requirements of all subordinate units, retaining administrative authority over all unit budgets, and assuming budgetary responsibility for the units of Student Academic Support Services.

3. Facilitates the professional development of staff by establishing an environment and engendering a philosophy which promotes professional development as a goal, encouraging participation in professional development opportunities such as membership in professional organizations and/or attendance at professional meetings, seminars, and workshops, being accessible to staff as needed, evaluating performances and providing assessments of strengths and weaknesses.

4. Advises the Vice President for Student Affairs on all issues relating to Student Academic Support Services initiatives, efforts, and operations by making reports, recommendations, presentations, findings, and preparing other correspondence as required or directed.

5. Assures the communication of information and management of unit effort by conducting regular staff meetings with key subordinate administrators, receiving reports and assessments of unit performances to date, revising current assignments or requirements, and assigning new tasks to subordinate units.

6. Supports the Director of Counseling & Testing in promoting students’ development and psychological well-being by assisting, if necessary, in assuring the provision of services for individuals with personal-social concerns and life-planning issues, and insuring that experienced professional counselors, psychologists, social workers, and graduate students are capable of assisting clients in resolving conflicts which may interfere with their progress at the University.

7. Supports the Director of Career Services in providing professional assistance and intervention to Missouri State University students and alumni through the use of career counseling, internship and full-time job searches, and vocational and educational information, so that Missouri State University students may make insightful career decisions.

8. Improves retention of currently enrolled students by developing strategies and implementing and managing programs that focus and coordinate the efforts of the Student Academic Support Services units towards reducing or eliminating the causes for student disenrollments, that work in concert with other University units and offices involved with student retention, and that include faculty, staff and retired employees in retention programming.

9. Facilitates the ease of prior students returning to the University by developing a retention interview to be used as a basis to recruit those students for readmission to the University.

10. Facilitates the improvement of interracial relations on the campus by maintaining interracial dialogue as a priority for the unit, developing programming opportunities that increase interracial awareness and understanding, implementing and managing programs that encourage and enhance interracial relations, providing the resources for programming, and developing plans for a multi-cultural center which serves all members of the University community, to include international students, minority students, and non-minority students.

11. Assures the appropriate and effective staffing of the units of Student Academic Support Services by recruiting and hiring qualified applicants, providing guidance on University policies and procedures as well as unit operational methods, encouraging professional development through participation in professional associations, assigning appropriate tasks and unit missions, and evaluating performances.

12. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Vice President of Student Affairs.

13. Contributes to the overall success of the Division of Student Affairs by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs.

SUPERVISION

The Assistant Vice President, Student Academic Support Services is supervised by the Vice President for Student Affairs and supervises the Directors of the units of Student Academic Support Services.
