GENERAL FUNCTION

The primary duty of the Student Employment Counselor is counseling students for various part-time employment and volunteer opportunities and acting as a liaison between Missouri State University, employers, and community not-for-profit agencies. The Student Employment Counselor promotes Student Employment and the Campus Volunteer Center (CVC) on and off campus; coordinates Make-A-Difference Day activities, Into the Streets Service Day, Fall Job Fair, partners with CASL to organize and promote the Community Action Volunteer Fair, promotes the Day of Caring, and Read Across America Week.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience One year of experience working with students in a college or university setting.

Skills Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Effective organizational and time management skills are required. Computer literacy is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists students to obtain paid work and volunteer experience that will enhance their educational experience by providing information to students and parents about Student Employment/CVC, counseling students about part-time employment and volunteer opportunities, and assisting them with the referral process.

2. Generates part-time employment and volunteer opportunities by calling on current and potential employers and not-for-profit agencies and participating in various job and volunteer fairs.

3. Increases campus awareness of student employment and volunteer opportunities by organizing special volunteer events (Make-A-Difference Day, Day of Caring, Read Across America Week, Into the Streets Service Day, Fall Job Fair, Community Action Volunteer Fair), promoting them through various media, and making presentations to classes concerning Student Employment and CVC.

4. Provides information on employment and volunteer opportunities by collecting data and producing monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports.

5. Increases accessibility to employment and volunteer opportunities by developing and promoting the student temporary job and volunteer databases, maintaining and updating the Student Employment Website, and recruiting and promoting Summer Camp opportunities on the web.

6. Administers the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards by collecting applications of student participants and ordering and distributing awards to qualified applicants.

7. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Student Employment Coordinator.

8. Supports the Student Employment Center by performing all duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Student Employment Counselor is supervised by the Student Employment Coordinator.
