GENERAL FUNCTION
The Director of the Academic Development Center leads a comprehensive academic development program that supports, guides, and provides resources to faculty in order to promote excellence in teaching, the scholarship of teaching and learning, the scholarship of discovery, integration, and application, the effective use of technology in the classroom, and expands both the number and quality of faculty development opportunities.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education An earned doctorate is required.
Experience Two years of experience in the direct supervision of others and three years of experience in faculty development-related activities are required. Three years of experience in directing a faculty development center is preferred. A sustained record of excellence in scholarship is required.
Skills Excellent writing and speaking skills are required. An understanding of the best of what is known about learning and critical thinking is required. Experience with integrating information technology into academic curricula is required. The ability to manage a complex office environment is required; the ability to create, organize, and develop support for initiatives is required.
Other Prefer the qualifications for a ranked faculty appointment are met (refer to Faculty Handbook).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supports the University’s commitment to learning, research, and service by providing a vision, leadership, and planning for professional academic development.
2. Provides leadership by serving as a liaison with the Office of Academic Affairs, the Meyer Library, the Center for Assessment, Distance Learning and Instructional Technology, the Graduate College, and the Office of Human Resources in areas of faculty development and support for faculty in the design and development of courses, consulting regularly with deans and department heads about faculty development for the improvement of teaching and learning, research and service, creating new initiatives representative of faculty needs, establishing collaborative appointments with faculty and community members, and supporting research in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
3. Provides support, guidance, and resources for faculty development by administering, coordinating, developing, and offering faculty development initiatives campus-wide, overseeing the Gateway Instruction Classroom, coordinating development programs for all faculty, including per course, department heads, deans, and appropriate central administrators, and assisting and coordinating the efforts of faculty committees dealing with development.
4. Creates and manages an organizational framework to achieve academic development objectives by managing the Academic Development Center budget, collaborating with the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs in planning and achieving objectives, serving as an active member of the Academic Development Center advisory committee, and providing yearly reports to Academic Affairs on the number of faculty involved, the specific programs offered, and plans for the following year that support the overall mission and objectives of the Center.
5. Promotes the University’s mission and Six-Year Plan and the objectives of the Center for Academic Development by representing Missouri State University in state and national organizations that promote faculty development, managing the faculty development website, publicizing Academic Development Center programs, services, etc., and coordinating/sponsoring one major conference involving a well-known expert in teaching and learning per year.
6. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses.
7. Contributes to the success of the Academic Development Center and the Office of Academic Affairs by performing all other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
The Director of the Academic Development Center supervises faculty and staff working directly in the Academic Development Center and is supervised by the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
