Scholars House

Serious studying is a big part of the Scholars House residence hall. Yet the students of Scholars House are also very much involved socially with their peers  on campus and in the outside community. The Scholars House Hall Council puts on a series of social and service activities for its residents every year. Past events include campus scavenger hunts, barbeques, talent shows, and super-bowl parties, to name just a few. Most notably, Scholars House Hall Council has won the Homecoming competition for student organizations two years running.

Scholars House was opened for occupancy in August 2000 and provides a special living option to 115 students who are members of the Honors program. Located at 1116 E Cherry Street, Scholars House is on the north side of the Missouri State University campus. The building has three residence floors and a ground floor. Scholars House is recognizable because of its unique dormer windows, gray roof, and red brick exterior.

This suite-style residence hall provides single gender living areas on two floors for all students who meet the special residency requirements and an additional coed floor only for upper-class students. Each smoke and tobacco free suite contains a living room, private bathroom and two double-occupancy bedrooms. The living room is furnished with sofas, arm chairs, end and coffee tables, dinette set, area rug, and refrigerator / microwave oven. Each bedroom is furnished with desks, desk chairs, bookshelves, bunkable beds, wardrobes, shared storage space including a chest of drawers and underbed storage, and a refrigerator.

Scholars House offers ample study rooms, music practice rooms, large central laundry facility, TV and recreation area, fitness center, vending machines, and a computer lab offering the latest in hardware and software technology, including access to the Internet, word processing and spreadsheet packages, and laser printing. This hall maintains both a limited (weekend-only) visitation policy on the single gender floors, and a less-restrictive visitation policy on the one upper-class student floor. This hall is open during all vacation periods and requires a meal plan of all residents.

In addition, Scholars House residents who have their own computer and Ethernet card may connect to the university's network through the network modules provided in each room. Access to the Internet and laser printing facilities are available. More information about required specifications for computers and network cards needed to receive access to the network are on our ResNET pages.

Hutchens Scholars Floor

Like Scholars House, the eighth floor of Hutchens House is reserved only for Honors College students. Residents of Hutchens Scholars Floor are privy to the social programs put on by both Hutchens and Scholars House, essentially giving them access to the best of both worlds.  Hutchens Scholars Floor has space for 68 students (36 for females, 32 for males), with two and four person suites available. Visitation is limited to the weekends so that freshmen have access to the floor as well as other students.

Each smoke and tobacco free 2- and 4-person suite is carpeted and has one or two bedrooms, a private bathroom, and a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave oven, sink and cabinets and a dinette set. Bedrooms have two bunkable beds, desks, desk chairs, overhead bookshelves, wardrobes, and a shared chest of drawers and underbed storage unit.

Features include an aerobics workout room, fitness center, music practice rooms, large central laundry facility, TV lounge, ice and vending machines, recreation area and the New Dining Center which connects the Hutchens House to Hammons House, as well as a computer lab offering the latest in hardware and software technology, including access to the Internet, word processing and spreadsheet packages, and laser printing. Hutchens Scholars Floor remains open during all vacation periods.
