2005 HLC Self-Study Steering Committee
Review of May 26, 2005 Meeting
Members Present: John Catau, Bill Cheek, Tom Dicke, Frank Einhellig, Martha Kirker, Vic Matthews, Pete Richardson , Roger Sell, and GA Linda Rogers.
The steering committee met at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, May 26th in the Academic Development Center.
Old Business
Bill reported on his meeting with Dr. Nietzel the previous weekend at which he presented a request that the departmental and college overviews prepared for Dr. Nietzel might be made available for use by the Steering Committee. Dr. Nietzel agreed that the overviews would be useful, but also agreed because the reports were not prepared for this purpose, it would be appropriate to seek permission from the deans for their use by the committee.
The current assignment of the committee is to be reading the compiled rough draft of each theme, noting redundancies and omissions. Everyone should have read the draft and have prepared notes for next week’s meeting.
Discussion followed on initial impressions and thoughts from the preliminary read-throughs. Some topics that were discussed for inclusion were:

Accreditation of programs – including a
list of all programs that are accredited. Missouri State University probably compares very
favorably with most institutions as far as percentage of possible
accreditations and this would be one more piece of evidence for the high
level of quality control at the University. |

Retention/graduation rates – will
probably be included in the appendix and be referred to within the
report. This is a part of the
Performance Measures. |

Academic integrity issues – we need to
include this area as it is going to be an upcoming focus of attention at
the University. It can be shown that as a strength, we have improved in
this area. |

Enrollment – ten years ago we tightened
admission requirements with a selective admission program. We need to
report on the results and the flexibility used in administering this
plan. |

Upcoming name change – the name change will impact the emphasis on graduate programs and research. We need to address this in our report and make recommendations. |
As committee members finish reading the draft and compiling their reports they may send their comments to Bill or bring them to next week’s meeting, which will be held at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, June 2nd at the ADC office.
