2005 HLC Self-Study Steering Committee
Review of March 3, 2005 Meeting

Members Present: Barbara Bushman, John Catau, Bill Cheek, Tom Dicke, Sue George, Tammy Jahnke, Martha Kirker, Etta Madden, Victor Matthews, Roger Sell, Don Simpson, and GA Linda Rogers.

The steering committee met at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, March 3rd at the ADC Office.

New Business

The committee briefly discussed ways that both the Missouri State University name change and the naming of a new president might impact the report to the HLC. Though both will be mentioned in the report and incorporated into commentary on positive and progressive changes at the University, neither issue will be emphasized heavily.

Old Business

The committee had read reports from the ADC, UPAC, Assessment Council, Gen Ed, and Student Affairs for this week’s meeting. All five reports are perceived as being very strong and will be strong assets when preparing the final report. The fact that some of them included the names of all the persons involved in preparing the report was seen as a nice touch, and one that should be duplicated in as many reports as possible. When the request goes out for links to be added to reports, we can ask for the names of these people as well.

Issues from the five reports that will be incorporated into the final report include:

Examples of changes that have been made based on assessment:
bullet

IDS 110 and GEP 397 are prime examples of courses that affect a great number of people changing as a result of evaluation.

bullet

Residence life is a good example of a department that uses surveys and assessment to change policies.

bullet

The UPAC report outlines the planning process very well.

bullet

The fact that our Performance Measures are on the Web for all to see is a very unusual step for a university and can be seen as a real positive factor.

bullet

The Showcase on Teaching needs to be given prominence and emphasized in the final report.

bullet

Our involvement with CASTL and the national presentations we are making shows that we are not only doing something locally, but we are also helping to disseminate the information for the greater good.

bullet

The establishment of the ADC has been a major accomplishment since the last review.

Before next week’s meeting, Bill will send out more reports for review. The committee will meet on Thursday, March 10 at 9:30 a.m. in the ADC.

Respectfully submitted,
Linda Chadwick-Rogers
