Portfolio for HLC Accreditation > Steering Committee > Minutes for December 9, 20042005 HLC Self-Study Steering Committee
|
| The HLC does not want to merely hear talk about assessment process;
they want to see student outcomes
| They are looking for examples of true commitment to student
learning, as opposed to institutions that are going through the motions
"because we have to". | |
| Assessment is a big area of concern. They want to see that not only
is data being collected during the self-studies, but that the
institutions are then utilizing this data in their planning and
programs. This is a big plus for Missouri State University – we have documentation showing
that we have been paying attention to assessment and reacting
accordingly. Our Five-year Plans and the performance measures that go
with them will exceed the standard submissions from most institutions.
| HLC is concerned about general ed. program goals, and whether students understand them. |
Based on both her recent training and her previous experience with the studies, when asked what advice she might have for the committee, Tammy said:
| We’re definitely headed in the right direction. If we adopt the
bulleted style report to easily point out patterns of evidence, we can
make it easy for the self-study team. A well-written report will make
the team’s job much easier.
| We need to make sure that whatever statements are backed up by readily available documentation. If the site team can easily access that supporting evidence, whether in the resource room or on the website, it will help the team. |
The committee then discussed the need for creating an executive summary of the self-study report. It was decided that providing the summary to faculty, administrators, students, and others prior to the site visit would help everyone prepare for the visit as well as continuing to keep them involved in the process. An executive summary was prepared prior to the 1995 site visit.
The HLC Conference will be held April 8-12 in Chicago. Bill needs to hear from everyone who is planning on attending.
This was the final meeting of the committee until after the winter break. Meetings next semester will be at 9:30 Thursday mornings, in the ADC. The first meeting is scheduled for January 13th.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Rogers
