2005 HLC Self-Study Steering Committee
Review of November 18, 2004 Meeting

Members Present: Jim Baker, Barbara Bushman, John Catau, Bill Cheek, Tom Dicke, Frank Einhellig, Sue George, Martha Kirker, Pete Richardson, Roger Sell, Don Simpson, and GA Linda Rogers.

The steering committee met at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 18th at the ADC office.

Old Business

Committee members gave reports on the current status of responses that are being prepared by various departments, committees, and offices. Most should be ready for submission to the Steering Committee by mid-December. As final reports are submitted, Bill will send them on to the committee members. Once all responses have come in, an editing committee will be formed. Tammy Jahnke and Victor Matthews will be attending a training meeting on Consultant Evaluators in December, and Bill anticipates they will be gaining knowledge that will help the steering committee in preparing the Self-Study.

Sue George and John Catau reported on issues that had arisen at the NCAA meeting concerning the charges. The HLC committee sent charges to the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee, but not the athletic department itself. The IAC has a smaller constituency and a different focus than does the athletic department. After some discussion it was agreed that the committee needs to get responses from both groups. Bill Cheek will rewrite the questions for each group and send them to John and Sue for input before sending them on to the IAC and the athletic department. It is seen as appropriate that any responses concerning the current Tile 9 situation come from The President’s office.

New Business

The Higher Learning Commission’s Annual Meeting will be held April 8-10 in Chicago. Bill will send out an e-mail to the committee to determine how many members are planning on attending.

Mention by Bill concerning Phoenix University led to a lengthy, lively discussion involving how well Missouri State University is positioning itself for the future, where we want to be, and how to break out of the molds that we may have constructed for ourselves. The general consensus was that the first step will entail recognizing what has been accomplished by the University and identifying the direction in which we want to head questions which are the essence of both the HLC study and the Long-Range Plan.

There will be no meeting next week due to the Thanksgiving holidays. The committee will meet at least one more time before the end of the semester. Bill Cheek will email members with the next date.

Respectfully submitted,
Linda Rogers
