The steering committee met at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 23rd at the ADC office.

Bill announced that the departmental and college charges were discussed at Academic Administrators Assembly Monday and had been distributed in electronic form to department heads and deans. Sue reported that the College of Education will devote their next meeting of departmental heads to reviewing the assessment and discussing various ways for the heads to handle the questions. Tammy has also been invited to one departmental meeting to explain the charges and it is likely that other members of the HLC Steering Committee should expect to be receiving similar invitations.

The steering committee’s suggested changes to the graphics for the HLC’s final report have been incorporated into two prototypes. It was decided to put the decision on hold until the final documents have been assembled and the committee can have a better feel for which logo would be better suited.

Bill reported on a Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE) meeting he attended on the 22nd. The meeting concerned academic program review (Campus Based Review). The Department of Higher Education (DHE) is proposing to expand the current review program, changing from the current 5-year cycle to a 3-year program. In addition, they want to add site visits by staff and/or consultants to analyze the review processes.

There was much discussion by the committee on the seeming redundancy of another site visit by yet another agency. It was agreed that many of the things the DHE is looking for are already covered in the HLC self-study process. Martha pointed out that Missouri State University is in a position to be an institutional leader based on the HLC work and our long range planning process and that these are things we should be credited for doing. Current program review activities need to be published as policy, however, in order to document what the institution is doing. Published policy would provide "proof" to DHE and others. It was agreed that if the DHE is more interested in the review processes themselves, rather than the outcomes of the program reviews, then we need to have a way to satisfy them as to the quality of our reviews. It was suggested that the steering committee might be able to put forward some suggestions for policies and procedures.

The next meeting of the committee will be on Thursday, September 23^rd at which time there will be a report from the Citizenship and Service Learning Committee.
