The steering committee met at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 2nd at the ADC office.

Jeanie Stephens from the Educational Technology Center (ETC) presented several prototypes for a graphic that would help to convey the work of the HLC. She made observations as to the strengths/weaknesses of each and suggested that the text be simplified to improve the clarity and impact of any eventual logo. Further discussion on the logo was tabled until a future meeting.

The final version of the wall chart depicting the matrix of questions for the Self-Study was presented. The chart has been already used in a presentation to the CBHE where it successfully helped satisfy some concerns.

Bill Cheek reported on the status of the committee charges. He has prepared 20 so far, concentrating on those with either the greatest number of charges, or those involving the greatest number of groups. Eight advance copies have already been sent out. The cover letter is not done yet, but will be completed by next week.

The committee was asked to review the charges that had been prepared for distribution to the Academic Departments. Much discussion followed with the result that three major revisions were determined to be necessary: to reorganize the questions from a "macro" level to "micro"; to combine some of the questions that were perceived as being redundant; and to revise the wording of question # 9 which dealt with the reward systems for students. A subcommittee consisting of Bill Cheek, Roger Sell, Pete Richardson, and Tom Dicke will meet early next week to make the revisions.

As it will be important to obtain positive faculty cooperation with the Self Study it was determined that a member of the HLC Steering Committee should be present at each College as the charges are presented to the department heads. In addition, at the meeting of the AAA on Sept. 20, Tammy Jahnke, Sue George, and a third department head will conduct a short panel discussion to share how they are presenting the study to their departments. The panel presentation will be part of the agenda for the Sept 20 Academic Administrators Assembly.

Bill Cheek, Tom Dicke, Roger Sell, and Linda Rogers will be meeting with Sara Clark next week to discuss necessary updates to the website.

The next meeting of the committee will be on Thursday, September 9.
