Gender Studies Requirements

What does the Gender Studies Minor require?

Students must take:

  • One of the following courses: PSY 355, PSY 356, SOC 290, or GST 170: Sex, Gender and Self
  • Fifteen hours additional course work, with at least three credit hours in each of the following areas:

Arts and Letters

  • ART 378: Women in Art
  • COM 307: Gender and Communication
  • ENG 380: Introduction to Women's Literature
  • ENG 580: Gender Issues in Language and Literature

Humanities and Public Affairs

  • CAS 410:  Crime, Justice and Gender
  • ECO 315: Economics of Gender
  • HST 319: Women in American History to 1870
  • HST 320: Women in American History since 1870
  • HST 321: Women in Western Civilization
  • HST 322: Women in U. S. History
  • HST 323: Women in Africa
  • PHI 319: Feminist Philosophy
  • PLS 319: Women in Politics
  • PLS 517: Civil Rights and Liberties in the American Constitutional System
  • REL 370: Women in Religion
  • SOC 290: Sociology of Gender Roles

Health and Human Services

  • GER 320: Gender Issues in Later Life
  • NUR 327: Issues in Women's Health
  • PED 402: Women in Sport
  • PED 405: Gender in Sport
  • PSY 355: Psychology of Women
  • PSY 356: Psychology of the Men
  • SWK 320: Services for Women

A maximum of three hours credit from variable content/special topic courses may be applied to the minor. Such courses might include:

  • ANT 397 TOPICS: Gender and Culture
  • COM 397 TOPICS: Gender and Communication
  • MUS 399 TOPICS: Women in Music

A minimum grade point of 2.50 in all courses count toward the minor.
