Workshops for Missouri First Steps Providers Serving Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing Birth-Age 3
A Comprehensive Approach
Once again, Missouri State University in affiliation with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is proud to once again offer workshops to First Steps providers and coordinators who serve children who are deaf and hard of hearing and their families! Participants enrolled in the modules will earn 1 graduate credit per workshop.
The Department will not only provide scholarships to cover tuition for each graduate credit, but will also reimburse for travel expenses! Enrollment is limited (only 10 will be accepted) and priority is given to individuals from diverse geographical locations in Missouri.

November 5th and 6th, 2010 - 1 Graduate Credit
Hearing Loss and Hearing Technology ← Click here for the course syllabus!
Appreciating the life change a family experiences when a hearing loss is presented is crucial for providers to understand. This two day workshop is the nuts and bolts of understanding hearing loss and hearing technology. Information will be provided on reading and interpreting audiograms, understanding the workings of hearing aids and cochlear implants and investigating techniques to improve signal to noise ratio.

Communication is the heart of our society and lives. In order to understand communication this two day workshop will explain typical speech and language development for children birth to age three. Participants will also explore the effects that hearing loss can have on speech and language development. They will develop an understanding of assessment and treatment tools, and speech characteristics of individuals using hearing aids or cochlear implants.
January 4th and 5th, 2011 - 1 Graduate Credit
Utilizing Parent Choice in Communication Options to Meet the Needs of Their Child ← Click here for the course syllabus!
Embracing parent choice is essential for success! Providers will learn strategies to enhance listening, speech, and language through the child’s primary mode of communication. In addition participants will utilize functional sign language through interactive learning.
All workshops will be offered on the Missouri State University campus in Springfield, Missouri in the Professional Building from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Upon acceptance into the workshop(s) you will be notified via e-mail and mail by Graduate Assistant, Mallory Mahon. E-mail and mail will include directions and parking permits to Missouri State University.
Each workshop is worth one credit hour of graduate course work. Courses will be directed by Missouri State University clinical associate professors Jill Oswalt M.A. CCC-SLP and Karen Engler M.A., CED. Food and drink will be provided throughout workshops.
