The Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCS) program provides a well-rounded, quality university education. It is an interdisciplinary course of study, which includes six core areas: family and human development, child development, consumer and resource management, nutrition and wellness, fashion and textiles, and housing and interior design.
The Family and Consumer Sciences program culminates with a Bachelor of Science in Education. There is also the opportunity to continue on and get a Master of Science in Education.
Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCS) graduates are in high demand statewide and nationally. This trend should continue as FCS teachers across Missouri reach retirement. With the Family and Consumer Sciences core curriculum and extensive education classes, students become certified to teach FCS classes from birth-grade 12. They can also act as a Family Life Resource Educator, teach FCS classes in Parents as Teacher programs, teach in nutrition programs for grade school children and teach middle school exploratory FCS classes. In addition to the course work, students gain experience through service learning experiences, clinical practicums, and 16 weeks of supervised teaching in a cooperating school.
