Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology Services at Missouri State University (MSU) provides a wide range of assistive technology and adaptive computer technology services. These services are provided to qualified students, faculty, and staff at MSU only upon proper referral to Assistive Technology Services. These services include training and support, in class accommodations, and conversion of required class materials into accessible format such as braille and screen readable text.

Training is also another service provided by the the Assistive Technology Lab. It may be as brief as a few minutes or include on-going sessions continuing over the course of a semester. In addition, all active clients of Assistive Technology Services are entitled to receive follow-up training and support for any AT resources provided to them by the university. Additional training is available upon request by the client or referral source.

Assistive Technology Services maintains an extensive inventory of circulating adaptive computers and other technology-based disability accommodations. These are available for placement in classroom or instructional labs (computer-based or otherwise) for an entire semester or as required on a periodic basis. These accommodations are available only for students who have an active case with and have been certified for such support by either Disability Services or the Learning Diagnostic Clinic.

Assistive Technology Services is responsible for conversion of materials to accessible format on campus. This service is available to students, faculty, or staff and there is no charge for this service. Students should request alternative format textbooks as an accommodation through the Disability Services. Should this accommodation be approved, required course texts will be ordered through the publisher in a CD or E-Text format, or through other agencies in a tape or Braille format. Should Disability Services be unable to locate an alternative format text, Assistive Technology Services and the student will be notified. At this point, the student should contact Assistive Technology Services to arrange conversion of required materials into an alternative format. The student should specify the most appropriate type of alternative format so that Assistive Technology Services staff can meet the individual need.
