Awarding Outstanding Students

There are many resources available to students with disabilities at Missouri State University, but one of the most valuable tools for any student can be financial aid to support their educational efforts.  Missouri State University supporters have created scholarships for those with disabilities.  Those scholarships, their requirements, and instructions on how to apply are listed below.  

Students should also be aware that there are nearly 850 donor-funded scholarships at Missouri State that are awarded based on area of study, academic performance, involvement, leadership, high school attended, area of residency, etc.  All those scholarships can be applied with the same application through which you will apply for disability scholarships on the new online Scholarship Manager system. Again, instructions on applying are provided below.

Diversity in Education Scholarship

Value

$2,000 annually for first two years and $3,000 annually for years three and four.  Recipients who are non-Missouri residents will also receive a full waiver of out-of-state fees.  (This scholarship can be combined with other scholarships listed here to a total of $4,500 for years three and four only.)

Application

Complete the Missouri State Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Application and apply for admission by December 1.

Selection criteria

Students must meet the criteria shown above for the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship and must have declared a major that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education or Bachelor of Music Education degree. Students selected to be considered for this scholarship will be invited to participate in the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship interview program (see above) and thus will be considered also for that award and for the Multicultural Leadership Recognition Award.

Criteria to be considered for the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship include: Student must rank in the upper one-half of their class (or 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale) at the end of their sixth semester in high school and have demonstrated leadership in multicultural school or community activities or organizations. The Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Selection Committee will review applicants and select candidates to be invited to campus for interviews to be held on the MSU campus.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. Must complete 24 credit hours at Missouri State each year with a 2.75 GPA. Student must remain in program leading to teaching certificate and in year three and four student must be admitted to Teacher Education Program.

Hammond Scholarship for the Visually Impaired

Value

At least one scholarship valued at $1,000 will be awarded annually.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

This scholarship considers financial need. Please submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) preferably by Feb. 15.

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a visually impaired student with preference for those students with strong academic credentials and financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Jim Ferguson Diversity Enhancement Scholarship Fund

Value

Number of scholarships and scholarship award amounts vary depending on the availability of funding, but funding is usually available for three to four $1,000 - $1,500 scholarships.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to full-time incoming freshmen students that will promote a diverse educational environment with consideration given based on high school leadership and citizenship. First preference will be given to graduates from Springfield, MO high schools. Second preference given to graduates from Greene or Christian County MO high schools. Third consideration given to students graduating from high schools in the state of MO. Fourth consideration given to graduates from high schools outside of MO. Must have written recommendation from a high school counselor and must submit an essay detailing their contribution to diversity.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. Scholarship may be renewed automatically for a maximum of five years as long as the student takes 24 credit hours a year and maintains a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.

John and Fredna Mahaffey - Operation Education Program

Value

Number of scholarships and scholarship award amounts vary depending on the availability of funding, but funding is usually available for three to four $3000 scholarships.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

Student must be a veteran, that was disabled after September 11, 2001.  The disability must have been caused by a service-connected injury that resulted in a physical disability.  The student must meet academic and eligibility requirements for admission to MSU as a degree-seeking student that is enrolled as a full-time undergraduate.  Scholarship will provide assistance for costs not covered by Vocational Rehab and the Montgomery GI Bill.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Multicultural Leadership Recognition Award

Value

Up to $2,000 annually. Recipients who are non-Missouri residents will also receive a full waiver of out-of-state fees.

Application

Complete the Missouri State Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Application and apply for admission by December 1.

Selection criteria

Students who participate in the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship interview program but are not selected for that scholarship will be considered for the Multicultural Leadership Recognition Award.

Criteria to be considered for the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship include: Student must rank in the upper one-half of their class (or 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale) at the end of their sixth semester in high school and have demonstrated leadership in multicultural school or community activities or organizations. The Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Selection Committee will review applicants and select candidates to be invited to campus for interviews to be held on the MSU campus. 

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. Complete 24 MSU credit hours each academic year with a 2.75 grade point average.

Multicultural Leadership Scholarship

Value

Up to 50 $5,000 scholarships will be awarded annually. Total potential value over four years:  $20,000.  Non-Missouri residents will also receive a full waiver of non-resident fees.

Complete the Missouri State Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Application and apply for admission by December 1.

Selection criteria

Student must rank in the upper one-half of their class (or 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale) at the end of their sixth semester in high school and have demonstrated leadership in multicultural school or community activities or organizations. The Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Selection Committee will review applicants and select candidates to be invited to campus for interviews to be held on the MSU campus.  Recipients will be selected following the interview process.  Students selected to interview for the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship will also be considered for the Multicultural Leadership Recognition Award.  Prospective education majors will also be considered for the Diversity in Education Scholarship.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. 

Additional information

In addition to receiving the scholarship, recipients will participate in the MSU Inclusive Excellence program.

Rob R. Freeman Delta Alpha Pi Scholarship

Value

At least one scholarship valued at $1,000 will be awarded annually.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate or undergraduate student that is a member of Alpha Delta Pi.  Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or higher.  First preference should go to an undergraduate student.  If there is no member of Alpha Delta Pi that applies, the recipient should be an individual that uses the Disability Resource Center as selected by the Center's Director.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. Scholarship may only be renewed for one year.

Tolerance Advocacy Scholarship

Value

Number of scholarships and scholarship award amounts vary depending on the availability of funding, but funding is usually available for one to two $1,000 scholarships.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time student with at least 24 hours demonstrating a commitment to tolerance at Missouri State University through participation in organizations or events that promote respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds.  Students should discuss their impact on such events or the mulitcultural community in an essay. Must have an overall GPA of 3.0.  Preference given to students that have received the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship but are no longer eligible.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. This scholarship is renewable for up to three years.

Winkler Scholarship

Value

Scholarship amount varies depending on the availability of funding, but awards are usually $500.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time student demonstrating a physical disability. Incoming freshman will be considered based on high school academic performance and leadership, while current students must have an overall GPA of 3.0.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.
