Dietetics 

Program Mission, Goals, and Outcome Measures

Mission:  To further develop educated persons, preparing them for a broad range of dietetics and nutrition related careers.

Goals:

 1.  To provide a scientific foundation for expertise in the translation of food, nutrition, and medical science while promoting health and nutritional well-being.

    Outcome measures

  • DPD verification statement recipients will achieve, over a 5-year period, a first time pass rate of at least 80% on the RD exam.

  • At least 90% of students admitted to the Dietetics degree program will successfully complete the program and receive verification statements.

  • A five year average will show that within 12 months of completing the program, at least 75% of DPD graduates and verification statement recipients have been accepted into a supervised practice program, obtained employment related to their major or enrolled in a post-graduate educational program.

  • Following successful completion of a supervised practice program, one year of employment in a nutrition related field, or completion of one year of graduate school, 90% of DPD graduates and verification statement recipients will rate their preparation as adequate or higher on an online survey.

  • At least 90% of dietetic internship directors, graduate advisor and employers will rate the preparation of DPD graduates and verification statement recipients as adequate or higher on an online survey.

  • At least 90% of students will rate their preparation as adequate or higher during an exit interview conducted the semester that they graduate and/or receive a verification statement.

 

 2.  To promote self-evaluation, lifelong learning, and ethical practice.

    Outcome measures

  • Students will complete at least 90% of the self-evaluation components in required dietetics courses.

  • At least 75% of responding DPD graduates and verification statement recipients will report on an annual survey that they have participated in continuing education activities.

  • Preparation of graduates for ethical practice will be rated as adequate or higher by at least 90% of DPD graduates, verification statement recipients, internship directors, graduate advisors and employers on an online survey.

 

  3.  To provide a foundation of nutrition knowledge for application in other fields.

    Outcome measures

  • At least 75% of nutrition minors will indicate that they plan to use nutrition knowledge in their chosen field upon completion of BMS 333.

  • At least 90% of graduates with nutrition minor swill have an average GPA of 2.5 in nutrition courses taken for the minor.

 

 STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

1.  Students will demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills with lay and professional audiences, including the use of current information technologies.

2.  Students will demonstrate a sound knowledge base in the physical, biological and social sciences as a foundation for application in professional dietetics courses.

3.  Students will demonstrate the ability to apply the science of food and nutrition in managing health promotion and disease prevention nutrition programs for individuals and diverse populations throughout the life span.

4.  Students will demonstrate the ability to assess nutritional status and apply the principles of medical nutrition therapy in the care of patients from diverse cultural and socioeconomic environments.

5.  Students will demonstrate the ability to use effectively the techniques and tools for managing food and health service systems.

6.  Students will demonstrate knowledge of health care policy, delivery systems and current reimbursement issues.

7. Students will utilize critical think skills and recognized scientific methods in professional practice and research.

8. Students will demonstrate the ability to work with others and to apply the profession's Code of Ethics in the practice of dietetics.
