Scholarships and Financial Aid

As a student in the department of communication sciences and disorders, you are eligible for a number of scholarships specifically for students pursuing a major, minor or graduate level degree in communication sciences and disorders or one of its related programs.

Keep in mind that you may also qualify for University-wide scholarships. In addition to reviewing the departmental scholarships listed below, be sure to visit the office of student financial aid, which provides information about University scholarships, grants and loans. You are encouraged to apply for every scholarship you might be eligible to receive.

Graduate students may also be interested in applying for graduate assistantships within the communication sciences and disorders department or a related area.

Scholarships designated for CSD students

The following scholarships are designed to support your studies and reward your promise. The required steps and materials for each scholarship application are included in the descriptions below.

Laurabeth Windham Scholarship

Value

Number of awards and value dependent on the availability of funding, but awards are generally $500 - $1,000.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a second year graduate student seeking a Masters in Speech-Language Pathology who has completed at least one semester of study that has an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 4.0 in clinical practicum.In addition, interested students will be judged on accumulated evaluations of clinical skills in the student’s record, midterm documentation of clinic performance during the semester of application submitted as part of the application, a personal essay (1000 word max) submitted as part of the application, and a letter of support from a clinical faculty member or academic faculty who has provided clinical supervision who is not on the selection committee.

Herbert J. Arkebauer NSSLHA Scholarship

Value

Number of awards dependent on the availability of funding, but generally three scholarships are awarded each year - one for each major program area (Audiology, Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Speech and Language Pathology).  Awards are always $250.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

This scholarship considers financial need. Please submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) preferably by Feb. 15.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Selection criteria

Awarded to a full-time first or second year graduate student in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department. Consideration will be given to financial need and leadership.

Dr. Neil DiSarno Scholarship

Value

A single $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Selection criteria

One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student seeking a degree in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and demonstrated leadership abilities. Preference will be given to International students.

Debbie Gregory Memorial Assistive Technology Award

Value

Number and value of awards dependent on the availability of funding and conference-related costs.  Awards are generally at least $1,000.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Upon being selected to receive this scholarship, student must send some form of confirmation that they will be attending the specific conference with which the scholarship is meant to assist. That confirmation should be submitted to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and usually is in the form of registration for the specific conference.

Once the department has confirmed this proof, the scholarship funds will be dispersed in full to the student account.  As long as the student has no charges on their account, the funds will then be transferred to whatever bank account they have set-up for Direct Deposit.  The funds can then reimburse the student for registration fees, and then be used to assist with other expenses such as securing travel, lodging, etc.

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Selection criteria

Awarded to a student enrolled in Speech Language Pathology graduate program. Award will be for expenses related to approved assistive technology conferences. Student required to submit a personal statement outlining their experience/interest in field of assistive technology and speaking to professional goals in assistive technology.
