August  1—Summer Commencement:   To help celebrate the achievements of our graduates, the College of Humanities and Public Affairs will sponsor a reception for graduates and their family at 11:00 am in STRO Atrium. Commencement exercises will be held in the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts at 1:00 pm.

August 20—20th Showcase on Teaching and Learning– Strong Hall will be the setting for the concurrent sessions from 8:00 am – 11:45 am. A lunch will take place at noon in PSU Ballroom 300W followed by a NEW concluding symposium  in Meyer Library Auditorium 100 from 1:45-3:30 pm. Register on-line at http://www.missouristate.edu/fctl/ or call (417) 836-3059. All events are free. One registration takes care of all events. Everyone teaching courses at Missouri State University is welcome to attend!

August 21—All Faculty Luncheon. President Nietzel hosts the all faculty luncheon on Thursday, August 21st at 11:45 am in the PSU Ballroom.  New faculty will be introduced and the University Award winners will be recognized.

August  24—New Student Convocation. The 2008 New Student Convocation will formally begin the 2008-2009 academic year at 2:00 pm in Hammons Student Center. Speakers include President Dr. Michael Nietzel, Provost Dr. Belinda McCarthy, and Student Body President Orlando Hodges. New Freshmen are expected to attend; parents and the public are invited.

August 27—New Faculty Breakfast.  This is a breakfast for all new CHPA faculty.  It is in the PSU from 7:30 – 9:00 am.

August 28—All College Meeting.  Provost Belinda McCarthy will speak to CHPA faculty and answer any questions they may have about the coming academic year. Dr. Pauline Nugent, Faculty Senate Chair, will address teaching excellence and service commitments.  Interim Dean Victor Matthews will discuss College goals for the coming year.  The meeting is at 3:30 pm in STRO 004.

September  9—The College of Arts and Letters Asian Arts & Letters Initiative is sponsoring a presentation by Richard Salomon, "Rediscovering a Lost World of Early Buddhism."  Tuesday, September 09, 2008, 3:30 PM-5:00 PM in Meyer Library 101.

Prof. Richard Salomon of the University of Washington is an international expert on ancient birch bark Buddhist scrolls. He is leading the collaborative investigation of recent discoveries of the world's oldest Buddhist texts, which are comparable in significance to the Dead Sea Scrolls. He will give a lecture on what these first- and second-century texts, which were found in Afghanistan, reveal about early Indian Buddhism.

September 10—September 2008 MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT - Ozarks Chapter, Missouri Archaeological Society

When: 7:00 pm on (second) Wednesday, September 10, 2008,   NOTE MEETING DATE CHANGE: Meeting is on 2nd Wednesday of Month Where: Center for Archaeological Research, Missouri State University, 622 S. Kimbrough (enter from parking lot on east side) Springfield, MO (417) 836-5363 Guest Speaker: Dr. A. Holly Jones, Missouri State University

Program:  Dr. Jones will present the results of the MSU Archaeological Field School research at two historic sites in SW Missouri. The McKenzie-Townsend site at Nathanael Greene Park is one of the earliest homesteads in Springfield, dating from the early-to-middle nineteenth century. At Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, investigations focused on Moody's blacksmith shop, which is associated with the August 10, 1861 Civil War Battle.

September 20—CHPA All Faculty & Staff Picnic—Phelps Grove Park Pavilion. This event is for all CHPA Faculty, Staff & their families.

 September 23-- ALL COLLEGE MEETING!!!

3:30 pm- Reception in Strong Hall Atrium, 4:00 pm- Meeting in 0004.

October 1 -- Provost's Research Forum features a presentation by George Connor (PLS) on "Whose Idea Was This Anyway? The
                        Trials and Tribulations of Writing and Editing a Festschrift
."  The event is in PSU 313 12:00-1:00 pm.

October 11—MSU Homecoming: Bearfest Village at Homecoming

October 14 -- CHPA MAJORS FAIR!!!  9 am - 12 pm in Strong Hall Atrium

October 22 -- CHPA Scholarship Banquet  - The Kentwood Crystal Room (6:00 - 8:00 pm)

October 22 & 23 -- American Indian Student Association Book & Bake Sale, Strong Hall Atrium
