Historical Archaeology of Slavery and the Civil War

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION AND LABORATORY STUDIES

June 15 - July 24, 2009

 

Missouri State University will offer a summer course in field archaeology and laboratory analysis. Students will learn basic techniques for conducting archaeological excavation, mapping, specialized sample collection, and processing. Investigations will focus primarily on 19th century Civil War and slave occupations, however, prehistoric components may be encountered. Students also will learn methods for the preparation, preservation, documentation, and interpretation of archaeological materials.

 

COURSE:            ANT 451, Field Archaeology (6 credits)

TIME:   8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday

INSTRUCTOR:  Dr. A. Holly Jones

 

PREREQUISITES:  At least one of the following: ANT 125 Exploring Our Human Ancestry, ANT 240 Introduction to Archaeology, or ANT 250 World Prehistory; and Permission of the Instructor

 

ENROLLMENT:  Admission to field school requires permission of the instructor. All applications received by February 23 will receive equal consideration, and applicants will be notified of their admission status by March 2. Applications will continue to be accepted after February 23 on a space-available basis only. The maximum enrollment is 15 students. Priority will be given to seniors and to anthropology majors, however applications are welcome from other majors and from students at other colleges and universities.

TUITION:  

Residents:  $1497 total (includes 6 credit hours @ $186 per credit hour, $181 student fees, and a $200 supplemental course fee to cover supplies, equipment, and travel).

Non-residents:  $2553 total (includes 6 credit hours @ $362 per credit hour, $181 student fees, and a $200 supplemental course fee to cover supplies, equipment, and travel).

MSU charges a $35 application fee if you are enrolling at the university for the first time.
