Dean Stone stated that an e-mail has gone out regarding the schedule building for Spring 2007.

Dean Stone announced that the following CHPA faculty will receive college awards:

With regard to 2006-2007 program reviews for both graduate and undergraduate programs, Dean Stone stated that one department from the CHPA will be reviewed; Political Science was chosen.

Discussion:

Budgets for 2006-2007 are starting to appear on-line and can be accessed through the Financial Service’s homepage.  Dean Stone announced that initial figures on CHPA carryover seemed to be in good shape.  Final calculations will be posted by Financial Services soon.

Dean Stone asked about departmental plans for the Missouri State Homecoming on October 27-28 and the Department Heads agreed to continue the CHPA Alumni tent.

With regard to Public Affairs Initiatives, Dean Stone emphasized that the Provost wants more college/department involvement and cited, for example, a speaker scheduled for October 3, William Cohen, Secretary of Defense under former President Clinton.  Beat Kernen agreed to speak to Dennis Hickey about being lead contact for Mr. Cohen.  At the suggestion of Dr. Matthews, Thornton Miller will speak to Ahmed Ibrahim about his involvement as well.  CHPA faculty will encourage their students to attend this talk, and the Dean’s office will check into the possibility of having Mr. Cohen available to speak in classes.  Events scheduled for March 6 and 7, featuring Barry Brazelton, an early childhood development expert, should not require a leadership role from the CHPA.

Provost McCarthy is reviewing a proposed Department Head Manual.  She will be discussing this manual at a meeting of department heads next week.

Department Heads (except Dr. Dnes) should schedule a one-hour appointment with Dean Stone for formal evaluations and viewing faculty results contained in the 2006 State of Missouri State University Leadership: Faculty Report.  A need exists across campus to standardize administrator evaluations with more viable standards.  Faculty complaints include lack of communication and/or information made available to them and feeling that faculty accomplishments are not recognized sufficiently.

Remedial plans for correction will include posting all Department Heads’ Meeting minutes on the CHPA web page and coming up with ways to get information passed on to the Department Head and Dean for appropriate recognition.  The monthly Coffee-&-Donuts-with-the-Dean gatherings will be discontinued this year.

In preparation for the Department Heads’ Retreat, the following items were discussed:

CHPA Performance Parameters have been approved by the Provost.

Heads should bring the following to the Retreat:

Department’s Tenure/Promotion Guidelines (are expectations clear?)

Department’s Long-Range Plan (what are department goals for 2006-07?)

                      Compensation Report

Approximate deadlines for implementation of compensation plan:

Beginning of Fall semester        Department Personnel Committee chosen

End of September                     Department/College standards established

End of September                     Individual faculty weights negotiated
