College Policies by Date of Enactment

Appointment to Emeritus Status

               1.      If a retiring faculty member meets the qualifications for emeritus status as stated in the Faculty Handbook, the Head of the
                        faculty member’s home department shall notify the faculty member that s/he must submit a letter requesting emeritus
                        status along with his/her curriculum vita to  the Department Head.

2.      The Department Head will make the applicant’s letter and vita available to the Department’s faculty* and call for a vote.

3.      After the faculty* votes on approval of the application for emeritus status, the Department Head forwards all previously submitted material along with his/her written recommendation to the Dean.

4.      Upon approval by the Dean, s/he forwards all previously submitted materials and a cover letter to the Provost.

5.      Upon approval by the Provost, the emeritus status is placed on the agenda for the next Board of Governors meeting.

6.      Following BOG approval, the faculty member will be notified by the Provost in writing, and copies of the letter will be forwarded to the Dean and Department Head and the Office of Human Resources.

*Departments will determine whether non-tenure track faculty will vote.

Policy for Faculty Workload

 

  1. CHPA faculty may teach ONE overload course per academic year for reimbursement.
  2. No tenure-track faculty member, who has been given reassigned time will be paid for an overload, with the exception of IDS 110.  No more than one section of IDS 110 may be taught as an overload.
  3. All Continuing Education telecourse sections must be taught within the normal faculty workload, not as an overload.
  4. No faculty member may teach an overload without the written permission of both Department Head and Dean.

Equipment Security Policy

 

The following College security policy has been adopted in order to protect the resources of the College. 

For Classrooms:

 

  1. The Dean’s office will monitor classroom usage in Strong Hall throughout the day and make this information available to Department Heads.
  2. Audio-visual equipment delivered to Strong Hall from the library must be brought to the department office ordering the equipment, must be returned to the department office following the class, and must be picked up by library reps at the department office.
  3. A report of all missing equipment should be made to the Dean’s office as soon as it is discovered.
  4. Department Heads or their representative will lock all classrooms on Friday afternoon at 5:00 pm.
  5. Department Heads or their representative will lock all classrooms not scheduled for evening use at 5:00 pm. 

For Offices and Suites:

  1. No faculty office or other office in a suite should be left unlocked over a weekend.
  2. Faculty are urged to relock their office doors if they must go to class or step away for any length of time.
  3. Faculty are asked to be vigilant and report unlocked doors or missing equipment to their Department Head or the Dean’s office.

Additional Provisions:

 Alerts will be sent out to all faculty/staff by the Dean’s office during “high theft periods” (Super Bowl, World Series, etc).

  1. All University property that is taken off campus must be checked out with the approval of the Department Head or the Dean.
  2. Any faculty member who checks out University/College/Department equipment may be financially responsible for that equipment should it be damaged or lost.

Rotation of Classes Policy

 

If a department’s work is facilitated by assigning some full time faculty to T-TH or MWF classes only, then those assignments will be rotated from semester to semester.  Moreover, those faculty who do not teach classes every day of the week shall still be available for office hours, committee meetings, and department meetings on those days when they are not teaching.

Teaching Evaluation

 

It is the policy of the College of Humanities and Public Affairs that the common teaching evaluation instrument be administered in every under graduate class at least once each semester.  It is the responsibility of Department Heads to see that the all classes are evaluated and that the completed forms are returned to the Dean’s Office. 

 

Individual faculty and their Department Heads will be given results and these results will factor into reappointment as well as promotion and tenure decisions.

 

Department Heads have the discretion to administer the teaching evaluation instrument more than once per semester if deemed necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of probationary faculty members.

Guidelines for Reassigned Time

 

MIMIMUM GUIDELINES FOR REASSIGNED TIME ENDORSED BY THE DEPARTMENT HEADS AND DEAN OF THE COLLEGE TO BE APPLICABLE TO ALL FACULTY

In general, departments are expected to average 300 credit hours per semester for each ranked faculty member.

1. Reassigned time for research (must be approved by the department head and dean).

  1. Those who have reassigned time for research are encouraged to present one paper annually at a convention which draws nationally and must publish one refereed article every two years or a book every four to five years.
  2. Those persons working on books must present evident to the department head that reasonable progress is being made on the book with good possibilities for publication (e.g., a contract with a publisher) within two years.

 2. Reassigned time for special projects or administrative duties.

A.    Those who are given reassigned time for administrative duties must have the approval of the department head and the dean.

B.     Those who are engaged in special projects, e.g., telecourses, courses on the internet, etc., may be award reassigned time with the permission of the department head and the dean.
