Citizenship and Service-Learning

Kelbie Abercrombie - BMS 240 - Culpepper Place
My experience with the service-learning course and my community partner was absolutely fantastic! Not only has service-learning helped me with my class work, it also gave me experience working with the geriatric community, which is sure to help me in my future career as a Physician Assistant. The invaluable experience and knowledge you acquire in a semester is something that cannot be taught in the classroom. I would urge that service-learning be a part of every student's college career. |

Jerome Johnson - PLS 356 - UN Depository
The CASL program is one of the best things about Missouri State. This past semester has been one of the most fun and informative of my entire collegiate career. Working with my community partner helped me to reach a level of involvement in the community and on campus that I had never attained before. I met some great people and made some valuable connections for future job opportunities. Service-learning has confirmed that I definitely want to go into a career in foreign policy, maybe with the Peace Corps or USAID. I can gladly say that it started with the CASL program, and I encourage any student here to participate. |

Kelly Fairchild - SPN 201 - SOC 336
I've participated in service-learning twice in my four years here; once through a Spanish course and another through a Sociology course. Both times, I worked with the area Hispanic community, and I've grown so much as a person from those experiences. From the children at the Hispanic church to the ESL students I tutored...from my teachers to the adults in the CASL office...there is only one thing I could ever say to them to encompass how I truly feel: Thank you. |

Karen Layman - ACC 622 - Volunteer Income Taxpayer Assistance (VITA) & Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC)
This class not only expanded my knowledge base regarding taxes, but also enabled me to offer this knowledge to those in need. Each of us, through our daily contacts, has the potential to make a difference in the futures of those we meet. I found great joy in my contact with each of my clients, no matter how complicated their situation. |
