The Minor in Exercise Biology

The major purpose of the minor in exercise science is to prepare the student for entry into an exercise science graduate program. The minor has been constructed to contain the basic science background required by contempory exercise science graduate programs throughout the United States. Furthermore, this program provides in-depth coursework in specific areas of exercise science required by those graduate programs. An exercise science minor is an excellent choice for students with majors in fields such as dietetics, biomedical sciences, biology, nursing, psychology, chemistry, pre-medicine, physical therapy, or any health profession where the emphasis of study is related to anatomic and physiologic functions of the human organism.

A student with a GPA of 3.30 or better who completes this minor along with a science based major can be virtually assured of receiving an appointment to a quality exercise science graduate program. The exercise science minor consists of a total of 23 hours. Eighteen to nineteen of the hours are in required coursework and the remaining hours are selected as electives from the list below.

List of Required Courses: 15 Credit Hours:

BMS 430 Sports Nutrition 2(2)
BMS 432 Principles of Nutrition. 3(3)
BMS 467 Anatomy of Human Motion. 3(3)
BMS 520 Medical Cell Biology 3(3-0) or CHM 350 Intro. to Biochemistry 3(3-0)
BMS 567 Physiology of Exercise Metabolism 4(3-2)

List of Elective Courses to Total at least 21 Hours:

BMS 230 Human Genetics. 3(3-0) BMS 260 Biology of Aging. 4(4-0)
BMS 335 Nutritional Assessment. 3(2-2)
BMS 563 Advanced Work Physiology. 3(3-0)
BMS 570 Principles of Pharmacology. 3(3-0)
PED 369 Health Appraisal and Exercise Testing Techniques 3(2-2)
PSY 508 Behavior Management and Change 3(3-0)

Prerequisites for Required Courses:

Some of these courses may be required courses with the major field of the student and may not represent added hours.

CHM 200 Essentials of Organic Chemistry (required for BMS 432)
BMS 240 Introduction to Nutrition (required for BMS 432 and BMS 430)
BMS 307 Human Anatomy (required for BMS 467)
BMS 308 Human Physiology or BIO 361 General Physiology (required for BMS 432 and BMS 363)
