Academy for the Assessment of Student Learning

The Missouri State Academy Team is conducting two action projects designed to intertwine the learning goals of both academic programs and Student Affairs. Together they will contribute to improved,

integrated student learning and its

assessment throughout campus.

Action Project:

                   Living-Learning Communities for First-Year Success

Description:

·         Six floors in four residence halls have been selected as “learning communities” dedicated to improving success of first-year students.

·         Students selecting the learning communities will be introduced to monthly topics related to academics (e.g., study skills) and personal development (e.g., managing finances).

·         Bulletin boards, door decorations, Facebook groups, programs, social activities on and off campus, and interaction with other Living-Learning Community floors, faculty members, and members of the University community will contribute to the learning process.

Rationale:

Studies have shown that students who gain knowledge of these topics early and practice thema in an environment with others will do better during their time at the University and in life after college. They are less reluctant to communicate with faculty, staff, and peers; with “learning communities” they should be better able to meet with professors, work through roommate issues, make decisions, discover who they are in terms of their values, and manage their own lives.

Assessment:

·         Pre- and post- surveys

·         Focus groups

·         Video segments

·         Comparative GPA and retention data

·         Anecdotal evidence
