All students who have fewer than 60 completed semester hours on their transcripts are required to have a conference with their academic advisor before registering each semester. Students should review the Catalog and the on-line Schedule of Classes (https://www.secure.missouristate.edu/ClassSchedule/crse1.asp) for the upcoming term(s) before seeing their advisor. When the advisor and the student agree that the classes the student wishes to take are appropriate to their academic and personal goals, the advisor will write an advising note in the student's advising folder on the Faculty Advising Resource Center and approve the student to register on the website.  If a student does not want to or for some reason cannot register on the web, the advisor will also sign the student's REGISTRATION REQUEST form. The student is then able to register during their assigned during in the Early Registration sequence either on the web or at the Registration Center (CARR 320) depending on the student's individual situation.

Pre-major (undeclared) students are assigned advisors in the Academic Advisement Center, and new pre-majors who matriculate through the SOAR program will receive a letter assigning their academic advisor within two weeks of their SOAR. If you need to visit with an advisor, please call 836.5258 to make an appointment. We are located in University Hall 109.

Declared majors should report their academic major department to be assigned an advisor. New students who matriculate through the SOAR program will also receive a letter within two weeks of their SOAR programs assigning them to an academic advisor.

Most declared students will have a department faculty member as an academic advisor. The major exceptions are elementary/middle school/special education and business students as those academic majors have advisement centers staffed mostly with professional academic advisors.

Academic advisors in The Academic Advisement Center are available by appointment to discuss all kinds of academic matters ranging from grade point averages to how to choose a major. If you experience difficulty at Missouri State University, the Academic Advisement Center will be able to help you or refer you to someone who can help you. Being a pre-major student is not a prerequisite for this kind of advice.

The Center also processes changes of majors/minors. So, when you want to declare a major/minor or want to change your major/minor, so UNVH 109 is the place to go.

An academic advisor does not take the place of the personal responsibility of being informed and taking appropriate actions. Therefore, it is important to read the Catalog and other appropriate materials published by the university.

Academic advising can enrich your educational experience considerably, so get to know your advisor and take advantage of his or her expertise. Besides, Academic Advisors are neat people!
