Understanding Your Transfer Equivalency Worksheet

Taking time to read and understand your equivalency worksheet will assist you when you are preparing to meet with your academic advisor.

TAKE YOUR WORKSHEET TO YOUR ADVISOR MEETING.

Reading your equivalency worksheet

On your equivalency worksheet, your credit for each college you have attended will be evaluated and listed by attendance period.  For example if you attended College A in the fall of 2007 through the spring of 2008 and College B in the fall of 2008 through spring of 2009.  The first college evaluated and listed on your worksheet would be College A for attendance period 1 (fall 2007).  Each period would then follow for college A.  Following the last attendance period for college A will be Transfer and Institution totals.  Look to the INSTITUTION totals to see attempted hours, passed hours, earned hours, GPA hours, quality points, and GPA.  Following those totals, information for College B will appear in the same order. To determine your total hours, add hours from each college together.  The number will determine your class status and be used to determine your eligibility to register.

GEP Codes

GEP coded courses fulfill Missouri State general education requirements as indicated below, but do not have a specific Missouri State University course equivalency.

Refer to the General Education requirements in the Missouri State catalog or online at www.missouristate.edu/generaleducation/ to see how the GEP categories correspond with those requirements.

Some majors and degrees require specific general education courses that the GEP code may not cover.

PEU Codes

If a course does not have a direct equivalency, but the College of Education decides that substantial similarity exists between a course taken at the community college with a DESE approved education program and an Missouri State course with respect to MoSTEP competencies, a “PEU” code will be assigned to that community college course and used to substitute for the Missouri State course in a given undergraduate education degree program.

Students who wish to appeal the evaluation or transferability of a PEU course may do so through the College of Education within the Education Advisement Center, Hill Hall Room 202.Students who are not pursuing a BS in Ed, whose evaluations show PEU courses should go to the Office of Admissions for re-evaluation.

GEN CODES

You may also have GEN codes on your equivalency worksheet.  See below for definitions of different codes.

GEN 000

Elective credit: course transfers but does not have a direct equivalency to a Missouri State course.

GEN 007

Non-transferable courses - credit not accepted.

GEN 010

To compensate for fractions.

GEN 011

Lower division general education requirements have been met by completion of an Associate of Arts (AA) degree.

GEN 012

Student is exempt from general education requirements (lower and upper division) by completion of a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university.

GEN 013

Lower division general education requirements have been met by completion of an approved general education program.

GEN 016

You are exempt from lower division general education requirement through completion of an Associate of Arts (AA) degree at a regionally accredited private college or university.

GEN 042

Statewide 42-hour general education core has been met.  Student must take HST 121 or HST 122 to fulfill Missouri State's general education requirements.

GEN 088

This indicates completion of an Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. These degrees do not fulfill general education requirements at Missouri State.  Students who plan to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a major in Industrial Management at Missouri State may receive additional transfer credit and should contact the Department of Industrial Management at 417-836-5121 for information.

Appeal of transferability or course equivalencies

It is reccommended that you speak with your academic advisor If you believe that an elective credit course has significant similarity to a Missouri State course or that a course was mis-evaluated.  If it is determined that a course should be re-evaluated contact the head of the department at Missouri State University that offers the equivalent course. The department head will review the course and determine equivalency.  You may need to supply the department head with a course description, syllabus, and/or other information for review.

Grade Equivalencies

Plus/minus grades:

Missouri State University currently uses a straight A, B, C, D, F grading scale.  Effective with the fall 2009 semester, a plus/minus scale will be used.  Because we evaluate transfer credit using the same policies that apply to current students, we do not transfer +’s and –‘s for courses taken prior to fall 2009 (so, for example, we convert a B+ to a B in calculating transfer grade point average); however, for courses taken at other institutions during or after the fall 2009 semester, +’s and –‘s will be used in determining transfer grade point average.

Repeat policy:

The repeat policy at MSU is changing for the fall 2009 semester.   For courses taken prior to fall 2009, students were only allowed to repeat courses in which they earned a grade of D or F.  The second grade replaced the first grade in the calculation of grade point average.  Beginning with courses taken during or after the fall 2009 semester, students may repeat any course with no limit on the number of repetitions.  Only the final grade will be used in the calculation of the student’s grade point average.  Like with plus/minus grading, we evaluate transfer credit using the same policies that apply to current students; thus, these repeat policies will be applied to transfer credit based on when courses were taken.
