It is important for students to know that you have to prepare early in your high school career for college — don't wait until your senior year arrives to hit the books. For both admission and scholarship purposes, many colleges look at students’ classes and cumulative grade point averages from 9th-12th grade.

Here are some tips and suggestions we have for students who are in 9th-12th grade:

  • Get to know your high school guidance counselors; they are there to help you succeed and to make sure you are on the right track to get into college.
  • Take the “college prep” curriculum at your high school.
  • Take the ACT or SAT early and often while you are in high school; talk to your guidance counselors about ACT/SAT prep classes or materials.
  • Visit college campuses early.
  • Start thinking about what you want in a college. For instance, do you want to attend…
    • a public or private college?
    • a large, medium, or small college?
    • a 2-year or 4-year college?
    • a college located in a rural, urban, or suburban setting?
    • a college that is close to home or far away?
    • a college that has a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students?
    • a college that offers a variety of educational opportunities (i.e. study away, service learning, student organizations, etc.)?
