Academic programs
Missouri State offers 88 undergraduate majors with 187 options, 113 minors, and six undergraduate certificates from which your student may choose. We also offer 48 graduate majors with 84 options, and 20 graduate certificates. Visiting each department’s website can provide answers to your questions about specific majors. Contact information is also provided for you to ask questions of our faculty, the experts in that field. If your student hasn't decided what to major in yet, that’s ok. Browse through our options together and discuss areas that might be a good fit. Many students at Missouri State choose to double major, or maybe even triple minor, if they have several areas of interest.
Academic advisement
As a new student at Missouri State, your son or daughter will be assigned to an Academic Advisor who will assist in a multitude of areas from helping them choose which classes to take, understanding various degree requirements, assisting them as they learn about campus resources and policies, to encouraging them as they grow both academically and personally.
First, your student will meet with an advisor at SOAR (Student Orientation, Advisement, and Registration) to select the classes for the first semester. Next, if your student has not yet selected a major, he or she will be placed with an academic advisor in our Academic Advisement Center. These people are professional advisors who know a lot about the different areas and majors on campus and will help your student through the major-selection process. Once your student has chosen a major, he or she will be assigned to an advisor in his/her field of interest; this person is someone who is very knowledgeable about that specific area and will work with your student through graduation.
Honors College
Missouri State’s Honors College provides an opportunity for those students who have demonstrated academic excellence and choose to further challenge themselves in a wide variety of coursework. Each year almost 1,300 students take part in our Honors College, learning with and from others in small class environments, conducting research alongside our top-notch faculty, and much more. Our unique Public Affairs Mission is incorporated throughout many of the Honors courses that will expand your student’s knowledge and skills in the areas of Cultural Competence, Ethical Leadership, and Community Engagement.
